... week we discussed normal people. Stay tuned to hear US talk about how connall is a consent King, how Nile is the second coolest Nile that we've ever known and how we're going to go rent Marianne's Italian villa this summer. This is a podcast where two best friends talk about movies they've never seen before. I'm Isabelle and I'm Lauren, and this is how have we never seen this before? Before we gain the episode, we just wanted to give a quick morning that we'll be talking about mental health issues and we will mention suicide. So if that is something that you're not comfortable with, it might be best to skip this episode. But with that, let's get right into it. Good Morning. I had like something to say the beginning of this episode and I don't remember, so I probalytized. Maybe I'll remember like halfway through or something. Oh, I remember. We're for three hundred followers on instagram. Yay. I don't know how this happened, but in like the last week we've kind of grown a lot, right and like we were like I hope we two hundred by the end of November, by the end of the year even. Yeah, and we're over three under no. Yeah, so, if you ever want to check us out on instagram. It's how we never podcast. I know we usually say it at the end of the episode, but I don't know if ever makes it to the end. They long and we're working on it. But yeah, thank you. It's crazy. It's a lot of other podcast which is really cool. Yeah, the podcast community is so amazing and so supportive and I just I love the ball yeah, they're really, really nice. But anyway, yeah, so were you watch normal people this week? The show was like really popular this summer or like early, early quarantine. So I didn't know anything about it, like I try not to know anything about the shows watching, but I knew it was really popular and a lot of people liked it at the time. Yeah, I feel like our time has come. Like watching Love Island UK has really prepared us for this moment. You know, we've just been training. It's great. We can understand the accents. They're Irish, I and I only knew that because I read like the introduction to the show. Like I probably could have guessed it, but I also would have been like, oh, there's Scottish. Everyone hated me. So it's yeah, did you read the book at all? The nobody time want to, but if they do, you remember when we watched loving the time of quarantine or whatever. Yeah, and he gives her this book. Yeah, so I was like, I don't want to like read it because I want to be her. I know, I don't want to be basic, but it seems like a good book. Oh, I do have a fun fact about the show. So a lot of the scenes look like really weird towards like the middle end of the show and it looks like connal and Marian aren't really in the same room or like it was just kind of weird. That's because some of the scenes were affected by the pandemic. Oh, because they had to were filming this then. Well, they filmed until late February, so things were kicking off in the UK then. Right, yeah, we didn't like do anything to work it. Yeah, because actually, I won't say it. I was gonna get political for a second, but you know, too much politics in this podcast. Yeah, this is an entertainment. We're entertaining. Yeah, okay,...

...so basically, if you haven't heard about this show, at all. It follows like six years ish of the wives of two people, Marian and CONALL, they both went to the same school in high school and we see them as day go through high school and you're in the relationships and their relationships with friends and then into college and how they handle that and basically how their wives are kind of always intertwined, which I think is a good way to put it. Yeah, and they're kind of our only two main characters. Like there's a lot of side characters and I'm not going to say you're not important, because you are important. Oh God, Matt The actor can plays Matt scambit. I would like to apologize for Lauren's true behavior last week. She said they didn't matter and then he commented on our post and you do matter and you're important and we love you. I'm so sorry to anyone that I've send by saying that I don't care about side characters, like they're very important to the plot and it's just where we make our podcast too long anyway and we just want to be mindful of everyone's time, so we have to cut down on some things. And that's sort of the character descriptions and probably should start the episodes, but we're going to try and be short today because there's twelve episodes. So our main characters, would you like to explain? Oh sure, okay. So first off we have the lovely Mary Ann. I wish I could say her name a little bit better because like more Irish. It sounds so much prettier one with when someone says it with the Irish accent. But it's okay, I'm not going to embarrass myself in that way. So Marianne is really smart, except she's like kind of the more like in your face smarty pants, like she'll always make her opinion known, which is like good for her, and she was bullied a lot in high school and kind of like a social outcast, but she finds herself in college. Her family is loaded, but she has a very broken family. They all kind of hate each other. Yeah, so she doesn't have any friends in high school but blossoms in college. And then you have conall. He's more of like a silent smarty pants. His family is poor and it's just him and his mom, but they're very close and they love each other a lot and it's really cute. I love her and he throughout the show suffers with some mental health stuff and they kind of know each other because his mom works as she cleans. Con's Mom Cleans Mary and's House. So they interact after school and stuff too, that they don't just see each other in school. Yeah, yeah, I should have said that. That's kind of important. Now it's like a connects them with the end. So episode one, I didn't realize it started in high school. I thought the whole thing was like an adults show, like as them as adults, and then they were like supposed to be children him, but anyway. So I kind of thought a Marriam. She's very snarky and she's constantly like sends his attention sent to the principal's office. So in the first scene she talks back to the teacher and she gets sold the group the principle's office, but she goes home instead and later after school conall comes to her house and we see that his mom is her cleaning lady. And it's really clear from the beginning that conall does like Marian like. I think it was always obvious. He just never really wanted to admit it. and His mom like tells him that he should be nicer to her because she's always having this hard time, like she always sits alone and her mom's never around really, and when she is she's not very nice,...

...and neither as her brother and CONAL's like hangs out with a popular crowd. He plays soccer. Basically, the next day at school, her brother has to drive her and he just drops her off on the side of the road while it's pouring because his friend calls and asked him to pick him up. So there's this very like strange power dynamic between the brother and Mary. Her brother's name is Allen. Yeah, okay. Her brother Hame is Alan and with her and her mom and him like kind of being this not father figure, but like he tries to be in control of everything, and it's really kind of scary because you have a feeling you know where it will go if he's like that, power hungry, I guess, and it basically she has to cost super late, she's covered in water, she's she got stuck into a rain and has to go to attention because she was late. The teachers aren't very nice about it. Kinda like kind of flirts with the teacher after class and you're like that's weird and I was like, is it him or is it like her, like a teacher? The and while she's waiting for detention, Knna like comes up to her easily, always like coming up to her when other people aren't around, and she's like, Marian seems very feminist as she's like, I'm not taking like this from you at first. That's kind of what it seems like. And basically she says like, I know you probably hate me, but the own you're the only person who ever talks to me and I like you. Like she just says that straight out to him, which is like interesting but old. Yeah, real bold. And she also watches like after tension, she goes and watches his rugby games. So they're always kind of like taking a peek at each other. They're always just like thinking about each other. This is when I realized it wasn't rugby, but anyway, so this apparently this match was like a waft away match and KNA sits to Marianne on the bus fright back, and it's kind of cute and it's kind of parted, how when timelines are because it's like Kna's like picking up his mom at her house sometimes, and I don't know if it was after this rugby game or like when this was. It's like all kinds of jumps forward, but you never know how much time you're jumping forward until I go to college. But so while he stares pick up his mom, he starts like looking at books in her house and she's like, Oh, you're like different from all your friends, like they're not interested in like deep things, and I was kind of like, oh, she gonna be like, Oh, I'm Kirky and I like to read and I'm different. Pick me girls. Yeah, it's like that's kind of what it felt like from that moment. She was like, I'm different. I hate that sometimes, but but anyway, he actually likes to read and he's smart and he brings up what she said earlier about her liking him, and she's like, I wrote she doesn't say this, but she says, yeah, I like like you. I wrote that too, because CONALL's basically like so, do you like me, or do you like like me? Yeah, check, yes or no. I'm so so funny. Um, and he's he's just admits it. He's a little confused about how he feels and she's like, you know, we could like do stuff and none have to know we can keep it a secret and never do that. Yes, tea from Um and they like kiss ones and then it's like super awkward, but the with blushing. And then he leaves and like we see like this contrast between him and her a lot. So after he leaves, he goes to like a house party at this girl, Rachel's house, and he's like hanging out with all these friends, while she's just lying up the home alone in bed. She's like she seems to be this loner about. He's like always like with...

...people and having a great time. But the next week at school, like they're Mariann and connor are around each other a lot, but they just ignore each other when they walk by in school, because I don't really know how to interact with each other in a normal capacity. But he keeps looking over her during class and she like and after school she goes home and then Cona like goes and stops at our house and then they start making out again, or they make up for the first time. They make it a lot of and like for as soon as he kisses her, she's like can we take our clothes off? And I'm just like like okay, like the last week was the first time you've ever been kissed and now you're like, let's take your clothes off. It just felt like a lot to me. And then he's like, you can come over on Saturday. He's like, no, one, not right now, but you can come over to my house on Saturday because no one will be home. And it just feels like a lot. Yeah, I have some advice to anyone who would who would be willing to hear it. Um, if anyone ever says like, Oh, this could be like a secret, like no one has to find out to like save themselves from drama, that's not going to work out. Everyone will know and someone will catch feelings and be heartbroken. Yeah, we've all. Well, I don't know if everyone has experienced this firsthand, but I definitely have. It's not fun. So save yourself the heartbreak again, don't be in secret relationships with people. Yeah, it's just no, don't do it. HMM. But yeah, okay, so episode two. It's now the weekend and Marianna's at Connell's house because they're gonna do the nasty. But well, I'm not ready for later episode. Let's get into it. How many like euphemisms for sex am I going to use? Will find out. We'll keep good countering. Um. Okay, so before they get it on, they're kind of having a deep chat about life and kind of what makes them different, and then they they have sex and it's awkward and Cringey, but in a cute way. I like. The one thing I did know about the shows that people like appreciated how normal. Yeah, these scenes were, like, I guess, I don't know, there's really a lot of them, and I was kind of like annoyed by the end. Yeah, because like most of it is just them like breathing deeply. Yeah, like that's the whole sex scene. Just like the the close capturing just says gasp, and so I was like, okay, let's let's see something. My friend was sitting next to me while I was watching this and every time she looks over, they'd be in the middle of one of these scenes. It's just like, what are you watching? You don't like just like don't look. Yeah, I watched this show with my headphones on. It's easier than explaining it. Oh, yeah, my headphones are on the time. Yeah, okay, so that happened. Now we're back at school. They keep making awkward eye contact that aren't really interacting. And then one day they go to Marianne's house and Hook up after school, and I thought it was really cute because she calls him beautiful. But then the moment is kind of ruined when she creepily says that she's always wanted to watch him have sex. That was so weird, how riantic she's like, not even like like I don't want you to like might even having me, but like I just like when to watch you like, which I guess is like a thing. But they're like seventeen. Yeah, like Oh, I mean, good for you for being like...

...sexually awakened. It was just strange to hear. Then we get a montage. We love a good montage. They are love. They have several in this show and I appreciate it. Yeah, we had a montage of them hooking up and then avoiding each other at school, but it's more than that. They actually hang out together at the beach and they share intimate moments outside of sex. I'm Marianna and conal talk about what they want to do in the future and Marianne convinces him to study English at Trinity College with her, but not like because she's gonna be there, but because that would be good for him. Yeah, and he actually ends up doing that, but we don't find out until later. And then CONALL's friends are trying to figure out who they're going to take to the debs, which is the debutante ball, like sort of. I think it's like a similar idea. It's like their prom. And so his friend see Marianne and joke about taking her and she says like I wouldn't want to go with you anyway. And then they make fun of her appearance and Conal doesn't defend her, but he then goes and checks in on her after school and he takes her to a place called the ghost house, which is where all the popular kids go and it's really pretty. But then Mary Anne can't stop talking about sex and then they fight, then they kiss and they make up. Yeah, one I really like about the show is how conal is a consent king. Yeah, yes, yes, I was going to say that. Like in the first sex scene he's like or before it happens, she asked me as a condom. He's like yeah, if is that what you want, and he like like does it, no problem. He like asks her like if it's her first time, he's just like you're scared, or if anything, like if you want to stop, will just stop, which is really nice. That's the example that you want to set. Yeah, Oh, also, one thing I wanted to mention was like when they're at this goes house, ghost house, Marianne like says that she would like lie down on the ground there and he could do anything to her, and that like kind of like she do anything to make him happy, and that like translates over her entire life. Yeah, it kind of all of Marian's issues kind of stem back from like her dad abandoning her. Well, he died. That's not what I meant. I'm sorry, I just feel like we're yeah, like I get where you're going. Yeah, her dad. We find this out later, but her dad was abusive and abandon their family, which is why Alan acts the way that he does. It's why the mom is she's just removed. Yeah, and, Um, that's why Mariann has like I don't know how to put this in words. We'll just say daddy issues. Yeah, I do have. I also have a fun fact about this, like the sex scenes. Okay, it's funny. So apparently, when they were filming the first set, seen they like have to wear fake sweat. I don't know, like yeah, so they have to look sweaty and so someone's rays them with fakes wet. But when they were water, it's a mixture of something, maybe like oil and water. But Um, during the first one, when they rub together, it made this really loud farting noise and everyone was laughing and it was great. That's so funny. Okay, so episode three, two fund raids or for the devs, and when she gets like at a club, which is like weird to think, but like a it's totally normal for them because like you can drink it eighteen. But Anyway, they have this fund raiser at a club and the girls are like why, you look really nice, like the girls who normally mean to her, and the boys show up...

...and like everyone's just like complimenting her, sort of, except for conal. He just kind of nods because he's like this secret, I'm just going to naught you. And at one point Marian goes to dance with this girl, Karen, and the whole time they're dancing together, kind of just keeps watching her and after they're done dancing, they like standing next to each other and Conna like almost grabs her hands. But then Rachel, I think, like is like Marian money, go sell more tickets. Rachel was the girl I talked about a little bit earlier, but she's a popular girl and she kind of has a thing for conal, always has, and doesn't want anyone else to have a thing for him. Yeah, but when she sells marian to go somewhere tickets, this guy comes up and he's like he'll buy ten tickets if she dances with him. She's like, I don't want to dance with you, and then he like goes and grabs her chest and she's like most her and like she runs out crying, as anyone would, and Rachel's like, Oh, come on, it was a joke, it was funny. We were all laughing and Karen's like what is wrong with you? And Cona's like you're like awful, like why would you say that? And he drives her home. One thing that Marian does is she doesn't like not that she's not a lot of confidence in herself, she like is constantly worried about how connall interact with other girls. Like in high school. She's always asking about Rachel and later on she's always asking about other girls as well. She yeah, she's very insecure. Yeah, but he says he would never hurt like. So they actually go to his house and like they're just like cuddling and whatever, and he says he would never hurt her, but I was like he's definitely going to break her heart. And when she leaves the next morning, his mom walks in and like she's like, Oh, you think I didn't know about this, but he's like I don't, I don't want to. You tell anyone, like it would just be like weird. And she's like the MOM's like, I won't say anything, but like I don't. I don't really like where this is going. So yeah, and like all of his friends are like making fun of him for like the him taking care of her that last night and they make fun of Marion's appearance again and Kama like has a panic attack sort of after at this point in this kind of the start of his like mental health journey, I guess, like understanding like what he's feeling, and he actually apologizes to Rachel later on for like what he said the other night, which like he shouldn't. He definitely should have said that and then like asked her to the dance and he later that day he tells Mary and that he asked her, and she's very upset because like she has feeling for him, obviously, and she said that, like she's clearly said that. and His mom, when he tells his mom about asking Michel, she's furious. She's like like why would you do that to her? Like clearly she likes you. Like do you even treat her nicely in public? Like how here, like how do you like? How are you like this, basically, and after this, like Marion doesn't go to school at all. She's she never returns, like she keeps conn tries to text here and like see how she is, but she never responds to him. and She just been away from school for a long time because she doesn't really need to be there, I guess because it's exam time and they just study for them anyway. I don't really know how those kind of things work, but I guess that's it. And then it's a knight of the debs and Conna doesn't want to go. He takes Rachel and basically it's just kind of like a mess. He's not having good time with the pants and he leaves and he starts crying and like tries to call Marianne but he just leaves her voicemail and he says he misses her and that he loves her and he's sorry. Did that voicemail remind you of the vine? That's like I love you and I miss you and HMM, I know that one, but I didn't...

...even think about that, but it sounded exactly like it him. Oh, I do have one comments me. Yeah, so one of CONALL's friends tells him, like asks about Marian he's like how do you know that? We like have a thing, and he was like we knew this whole time. Like it was so dumb for them to keep it a secret, because ever knew anyway. Like in high school you're so obsessed with the idea that everyone cares and then like you realize that it doesn't matter. Like they didn't care. They only like pretended to care to like be in the middle of things, like none of it was ever important. Yeah, like they knew the whole time and didn't bother him and didn't care. So like, yeah, it was pointless episode. For our lovely children are in college. They grow up so fast. Yeah, now, the same time. Yeah, all we're in sink. CONALL is now meeting his first college roommate, nil. I love nil. He's he's really smart. He's kind of a slob. Tell me why. I was like really hoping it would be Nile who I was like, Oh my God, and then it wasn't. That would be beautiful. Um, but yeah, no, I was great. He's free spirited. He kind of brings conal out of a shell a bit. I Love Them. And now it's our boys first day. Oh, he like he is so relatable sometimes, like he's in a recitation for one of his classes and his teacher like calls on him and like everyone has already said their point and so like he's just like yeah, I agree with everyone. Yeah, I don't have anything else to add because, like, especially when we were at Uq, I would just like sit and recitations aside from like the one that we had together, and I was just sit there as everyone else talked and like said these amazing points and then someone would call on me I'd be like everyone has already said their point. Like what am I supposed to add? Like please, I feel so awkward. Don't call me so then he goes home on his first weekend because he's feeling some sort of impostor syndrome and he feels like he doesn't fit in because all the kids at trinity are so pretentious and so annoying. So then he meets up with his friend from high school and says he doesn't fit in at school but he doesn't fit in at home. So he's kind of he doesn't know what to do. But then he comes back from his trip home and his roommate invites him to drink with the friends that he has over and they all kind of vibe. And then the next day during class he says something kind of remarkable and this pretentious guy named Gareth invites him to hang and I hate Gareth. GARS sucks Gareth. You know, he defends Holocausts Denier, so we have no choice but to understand him. But Gareth invites him to come to a party at his house because he wants him to join this debate society. And of course, who is he dating? Oh, it's our girl, Mary Anne Conall, and Mary Ann kind of reconnected the party. She has had a major glow up and seems to have found her sense of style and is now confident and has a lot of friends and they catch up, but Marian starts to question her relationship with Gareth because she knows that he's a jerk. And and also, like one of Marianne's friends wants to set her up with conal because that no one knows that they used have a relationship except this one girl, Joanna,...

...that's probably Marianne's like best girlfriend throughout the whole show. Yeah, and then she the episode ends with her like randomly calling connell at midnight one night. Yeah, the other thing I didn't get is how it's like only week to a freshman year and Mary Ann has a boyfriend already. I feel like she's probably been there for a long time. Probably did like a pre college yeah thing. Yeah, I think that's something she would do. Yeah, and maybe it's like farther in and we just don't know, like maybe it's like October or something. Yeah, O, November, and they've been there for a while. That could be it. The last thing I have to say is that Mary in has an android, and really bothers me. I feel like other places only use iphones as much as we do. So all right, episode five. So basically they're really apod with the other phones each other because they haven't interacted in so long and they're going to try and be friends. So basically they start to hang out and they're kind of like hang out with each other's friends and we see kind of the I don't know have why this word kit come to mind, but like the degradation of Marian's relationship with Gareth. She's just really not happy and con a like kind of starts to hit it off with this friend of Marianne's, but it makes Marian upset because she still likes him, obviously, and one of Marian's friends, Jamie, clearly likes her. So there's just like weird, like not like, I guess, kind of love triangle that's kind of going on at the same time. Well, there's like all these people involved, so it's like a square or like a Pentagon or I don't know. So basically, KLA Marian hang out a lot on their own as well, like just together on their own, not just with friends, and he's kind of like he doesn't know who he is and what he wants, and they kind of talked about the past and like how that's affected them, and Marian like asked him if he would have asked her to the debs and he said he didn't think about it at the time, but he really wished he had and he feels really guilty by everything he did and he like tells her that he's really sorry for everything. And the next morning she tells Garrett that this isn't working and they break up good bye. So basically they're at this party and she gets super, super drunk, Marian does. She like tries to kiss him and she's like I want to like be with you, like let's go upstairs and he's like we're already upstairs. She's so drunk and he's like I won't sleep with you right now because you're absolutely wasted, but I'll see you in the morning. And an extent, King Right, and he like waits outside the Party for her the next morning because she just like slept there. And basically he's like it takes her home and they're like it would be difficult for us to say friends if we keep trying to sleep with each other. She's like yeah, you're right, and it's like I'm just going to take a shower, you can make coffee, do whatever, and then she comes down in a robe and then he u does a rope and then they have sex. But like also afterwards, like the ending shot is a like show everything. Oh yeah, we saw literally everything. You saw all of Conall, which like what, look, that's not at it's a BBC show. So, like, I guess it makes sense, but like that would never fly on American televin American television, could ever? Yeah, I mean that's kind of it for that episode. Is kind of like they finally realize everything that they felt for each other, I guess. HMM. Okay, so episode six, we're getting into it. We Open with Maryanne crying six weeks into the future.

We don't know why, but then we're back to where we left off. Marianne and con all just just hooked up and conal tells Marianne that she's his best friend, she's cute, and then they hook up again, and then they hook up again and again and again for months, but discreetly. They're not boyfriend and girlfriend. I was kind of like confused at the timeline in this episode, but I think I have it right. Yeah, I figured out by the end. Yeah, so it's not like they were making it some big secret. They just didn't like tell anyone, but they didn't lie to people who asked them what they were doing. So one day they are sitting down having a good old chat with this girl Peggy, who's one of Mary Anne's friends. The actor who plays conal and the actress who plays Peggy are roommates in real life. Oh, really cool. So the three of them are talking and things get awkward because they start mentioning threeesoms and Peggy leaves because things got really awkward. And then Mary Anne is going away with her family over break and Conna wants her to Sunday nude photo and they're debating on him deleting it. Like do they not have snapchat? I would love to know this. Take links during like right now. Yeah, okay, but then conall gets laid off at the restaurant during exams, so he doesn't really have a place to live. And then Maryann then goes home to visit her family for the weekend and things are weird. Her brother is really mean to her because he's jealous of her intelligence and he ends up squeezing a sponge over her head. Felt was kind of funny. I know it's not like good to joke about that, but it was if if it had been like in a playful like if you had been anyone else, it would have been funny. Yeah, I was really like. And then, because she would have like water back, but like her brother's like no, yeah, you know. Um. So now she's sending a nude photo of her crying. That was unique. Yeah, and then CONAL's roommate, Niles, like, why don't you just ask Marianne if you can live with her, since you stay at her place most nights of the week anyway, and just do it until you find a job and then you can live here again? Because he can't pay rent and he won't do it because he's too nervous to ask her. So he has to move back to Sligo, which is their town, their small town, and their fling ends because he's going back home. And it was kind of like a we like it. We don't know how why their fling ended. We find out later, but yeah, we're we're not supposed to like really know. Yeah, one thing I like thought was important was how she like her interactions with Jamie. Like conal gets jealous whenever she's with Jamie because Jamie's very touchy, like puts his arm or her, his hand on her leg and like is always around her because he does like her, and she like says him that. Like the one thing like that like has been bothering here about the relationship is that conal won't like touch her in public or like showing the affection towards her. So like they're at this party right before like we see right before they she's crying and like everything fells apart and he like looks over at her and he like comes and he puts his arm around her and like gently kisses her shoulder, like he's trying to like do...

...that for her, which she's really nice. But yeah, okay, so episode seven like jumps around a lot in the timeline. At least. We start out in July and we see Colin or cold that we see conal lying on the floor of his room at home and like he's just like waking up with a headache. But then we immediately jump to six weeks earlier and he tells he's telling Mary and why he can't like why like this is what happens. He basically tells Mary and then he won't be there for the summer because he can't pay rent and is going back to sligo and he's like, Oh, so, I guess you're going to want to see other people, and that's like kind of why they were broke up and everything ended dumb. Yeah, so stupid. And then it flashes to him at a club at home and he oh my God, he runs into the teacher from school that he was like flirting or like she was for, and then they start to make out, which is disgusting to school, probably disgusting. He's probably like forty or something, and like she was his teacher and like clearly she felt this way. Then she's like, Oh, I've missed you, like I'm seeing me some school, that basically, and he's like, I'm going to be sick. And then huge after she's like let's go back to like my place. And at the same time Marianne actually goes home for a weekend and she runs conall at like the grocery store because he's working there and she's just backed for the weekend because it's her father's the anniversary for father's death. I don't know like of how long, though, clearly since he died before we started seeing their story. But she tells him not to come. He does ask, though, and she's also with Jamie right now, and basically conna goes to the mass anyway, and it's kind of like a moment of solidarity between them. kind of it's just like like thank you for coming, even I told Johnsy. And then now we're back in school. It September and they're trying to be friends. Apparently Jamie's very intimidated by CONALL and Jami's also very into inflicting pain during sex. CONALL's like like what, like what, like why, like do you like that? And it's very weird. While they're talking about this, and she does bring up like she didn't have to pretend to be anything or like anything when she was with conal and she would have done anything to make him happy, as she said several from before. And now it's April and we find out that conall is an English scholar and Marion gets to be a historian scholar, which means they get five year free tuition and housing and so like she going out to dinner with her friends or toasting her success, and conal calls Marianne and he's outside covered in blood because he got mugged for his wallet and her numbers, the only one he could remember from heart, from by hard by heart. Thank you, and like he holds her hand when he sees her and she's like Jamie downstairs, and then Jimmy's very passive aggressive towards conall and basically everyone leaves, even Jamie, and Conna states with Mary and to clean him up and Knna says that he's been seeing someone, but he's like kind of been trying to get her to break up with Jamie, and it's just like this weird thing going on and she's like I need you to leave, like don't want to be around right now, and he's like, I can't leave, I don't have any money. So she keeps him money and then he leaves. And well, before he leaves she says that she thought that he had wanted to break up when he left school the previous summer and that if she had known he had wanted to stay, she would have figured out a way, but she had no idea because he was just like I gotta go. He never asked. Basically, CONNA has a new girlfriend, Helen, who takes care of him when he gets back. Yeah, this is why communicating with your partner is so important.

It's just like all of us could have been avoided. That's like what kind of like I get it, because it's trying to be normal. This is trying to not like be like a show. It's like this is what really happens, but it's just like why don't, like why can't you show that people can communicate? Like really, we wouldn't have needed any of the episodes like after like six right, just talk to each other. Yeah, also, you kind of see that Maryann keeps going from boy to boy because like she can't really be alone, and I think that also like stems from her issues with like her family. Yeah, definitely. Yeah, I just thought I'd put that out there. Okay, so we're moving on to episode eight. So conall is going backpacking with Nile through Europe and they end up staying at Mary Anne's Family's summer home in Italy with the rest of their squad. Did you know that we could actually rent Marianne summer home in Italy on Airbnb? I didn't know that, but that's really cool. Yeah, it was a beautiful house. Yeah, it's like, Um, I think, like less than an hour away from Rome. So when Rona is over, I think I know where we're going this summer. The world's not over. Yep again. So during this time it's kind of trouble and paradise. Well, was there ever really a paradise for Marian and Jamie, who are there still together? Yeah, so our Helen and conall and Jamie's just being, you know, his usual awful self, and connal and Maryanne end up going to get groceries in town and they end up biking through the Italian countryside, just like Ellio and all over from Kalb me by your name. I haven't seen that yet. Oh my God, I just want that. I just want to be biking through the Italian countryside. Sorry, it just gets my heart going. But then they come back and Jamie is being so awful. I think I said that before. He's being pretentious and snobby about people who go backpacking and he's also like freaking out about Champagne flutes. He's also hammered too, and I don't know why Mariann would even want to be with him to begin with. I don't get it. Yeah, she could do so much better, but I think that stems from like her her issues with herself, and no one really stands up for conall and then Jamie says something racist. Just he's awful, and Jamie and Marian end up going inside and starts screaming at each other and Conn all runs in and breaks up the fight that's breaking out between them and he comforts Marianne. She asked him if she can sleep in his bed or in his room and he's like, Oh, I could. Do you want better? You could sleep in my bed with me, big enough for to and then CONALL and Marian end up sleeping in the same bed together. It's supposed to be as just friends, but then they cuddle because Marianne is in her feelings, and then thanks escalate, of course, but they don't. ATUALLY, they don't do anything. They make out. I would consider the well, yeah, they do that, but like in this show that's like nothing. Yeah, but I it's wrong because they're cheating on their so I know, I know it. Yeah, Um,...

...so that happens. That's the end of the episode. Really. Yeah, I feel like this jump in time is very weird. I feel like we're missing something because like the episode ends at them going on a train somewhere and they're looking at art and that's it. But then they like. I feel like there's something that the show could have put in because so the sort of episode nine, it's like it's the winter now and she's in Sweden. HMM, and like everything's fine, sort of like Marian and connor just like writing back and forth to each other. There's no more, like like all of a sudden everything's fine, which I don't get. I feel there we they missed like some reconciliation be between the two of them. Yeah, and I also had to write down, like I had to look up on the Internet the plots for the episodes, because I wouldn't have known that she was studying in Sweden for a whole year as like a semester exchange. I Know Conde says like the specific program in a later episode, but in this episode I didn't get it. Yeah, I didn't know why she was there. It just felt very strange. HMM. So, basically she's been like now she's so we're an episode. I now, but like she's been seeing this Guy Lucas. Wow, she's in Sweden. Um, and but basically she's like breaking up with him kind of, and she's like I don't want a relationship. She she says, I don't want you to say that you really like me. I want you the opposite of that, just just like she shouldn't said that. Yeah, that was like it's like very downhill after this very unhealthy so we see like conal's relationship with Helen, his girlfriend, and like how it's kind of going okay, and then we like see them sleeping together, and then we see Marian and Luka sleeping together, but her wrists are tied together and they're like in the middle of a photo studio doing this, which, like Lucas is a photographers, was not that weird. But then when it seems like they're finished, Lucas is like no, we're not done, even though you want to have a shower, and then he tells her she's worthless. Yeah, so she kind of just feels numb to everything and it's concerning. And now we're at a Christmas party called or Connal is out a Christmas party with his friends, are Nile, Helen and there's someone else there, but I don't know who that is. and Peggy like is there as well, and she like brings up the sexual things that Marian is into, and it's just like he gets really bothered by it Um and Helen is like why are you so bothered by what everyone says about Mary? And like she invites people to talk about her, which is like whereould you say that? Like that's like really mean. But basically that it doesn't amount to anything. At the time. CONNA Marian are like emailing back and forth all the time and she's like I'm not coming home for Christmas, like I'll be saying in Sweden, and basically, like it's just like not going well for her, like it's kind of all I like, I feel like I could say about that. She's just not feeling she's not like engaged in anything. She's depressed. Yeah, she's suppressed. I don't like just say that, though, but yeah, and we just see her like trying to feel something with like I guess. It's kind of like she's trying to feel something like with like painful sex or like, I guess. And like she says, bruises...

...on her arms and like Lucas is like taking pictures of her and like forcing her to do things even when she doesn't want to, and it's basically trying to force her into having sex with him and like tying up her hands and she's like, I don't want to do this, but then he just keeps going and then he tries to tie, I could maybe up her ankles or something. She's like no, and then he kicks her out and she's just like walking through cold, walking through a field in the freezing cold, and that's the end of the episode. Yeah, yeah, a wholesome episode. Yeah, it was like quite a lot. Yeah, this episode is just a lesson that you should never trust a man who doesn't have a bed frame or a box spring. Never, if you if you walk into his room and you see that it's just a mattress on the floor immediately. Yeah, it's just like it's just like this, like open nights, even a mattress. It's just like this like squishy, large pillow on the ground. Yeah, very weird. Okay, episode ten. So on New Year's Eve conal and Helen are having a grand old time, but then that's interrupted by conal getting a text in his high school group chat asking if anyone has seen one of his friends rob and the next day, the rain the his mom calls and says that he his body was actually found in a lake and he committed suicide. And he goes to the funeral and connects with Marianne there, and he also goes to the funeral with Helen and con all, as you could like, obviously is struggling with with processing this, because he kind of blames himself for not like responding to Rob's text and stuff like that. And Helen is being so moody after the funeral. I cannot believe it. Like she makes a whole, this whole thing about herself as like his friend just committed suicide and you're like worried about him seeing a lifelong friend and like hugging her. yeahulous. Like I was all for his relationship with Helen until this moment, because she's like, Oh, like, I saw how touch you were with Maryann, like you weren't touch you with me at the funeral. Like what? Like it's a funeral. She also says he looks handsome before going to the funeral. I'm like, why don't you say that, like he's clearly grieving. Yeah, it's, you know, just like Oh, you look so handsome. Yeah, it's just the saying it chief and then conal is, he's really going through it, really struggling with his mental health, like his anxiety is really bad his depression. Well, we don't really know if he has a depression, but I think we can tell and he's just not the same person that you was before. And Helen ends up breaking up with him because things aren't working between them. She's like, I I like, I'm trying to help you, but you won't let me help you, which is like, I guess, understandable in a sense, but also at the same time it's enough to like put him completely over the edge. I feel like it's hard, like we don't see everything, but I feel like at least like from the way she acted before, like she's really not doing anything. Yeah, that could be it too. In reality, like things just aren't working between them and they haven't for a while, and the fact that connal is really going through right now highlights those issues that were already there...

...before, and Helen brings it up. So I mean, like, I don't know, it's kind of a moral dilemma here. I don't think there's any right answer, you know. Yeah, but it completely destroys con all. But at least he gets help and sees a psychiatrist a few months after, and so I love to see that because I feel like, in a lot of other shows that we watched, like or like even movies, the characters kind of spiral out of control due to their mental health problems. Like a lot of their problems could be solved with them getting help. And the show actually shows conal getting help and we see him at a very vulnerable point and it it's kind of highlighting the importance for men to feel comfortable getting help if they're struggling with mental health, because I know that the stigma surrounding it for men is a lot different. And so, yeah, I really enjoyed that. And then the episode kind of ends with him and Marianne start like bonding vs skype or zoom, whatever their preferred video channel. Yeah, I really liked how Nile was the one who suggested he go. Yeah, it's like a free psychiatrist, maybe a community program but I think it's really great that he's the one who referred him to that. Yeah, like, my main thing was just I was so frustrated with hell and just like making this whole thing about like why do you introduce me your friends at this funeral? Like, what is wrong with you? God? They clearly struggling so much and that's all she can make out of it. Like Helen is trash. Yeah, like I thought she was like nice and I thought things were kind of working, but apparently not at all. Anyway. Yeah, two episode eleven. So it's clear like Conald like not that he's doing a lot better, but he's really like trying to get better. He starts like taking medication to help with his depression and anxiety. He gets a job at the library and is like writing again. He like sends articles off to my Zanes and Marian. Marianne is at home for the summer as well and her brother is incredibly meet her while she's home and since they're both kind of home for the summer, they've been hanging out a lot. They went to the beach together, they've just done a lot of things. But then they go out to a club together and they're dancing and it looks like they're going to get together, but something happens and he leaves. So there's just like this like strange interaction where they're all they're talking about like things that have gone wrong and like how they're still feeling, and they both say that they'd wanted to kiss each other that night at the club, but he was really worried because, like things haven't worked out for them in the past and he doesn't want to lose her again if things go wrong. And then it doesn't matter because then they just sleep with each other again. But basically, like she's like it's not like this withou anyone else, because I guess they're like real emotions and whatever. But then in the middle of it, she like asks him if he'll hit her, which I get is a thing, but like he's like he, like I meant is ips, like no, like I don't want to do that, like I don't feel comfortable with that. And then she's like, Oh, so you think I'm weird. He's like no, no, I just like don't want to do that to you, like he knows about her abusive father's pass he just doesn't feel comfortable with that. And then she like rushes to get dressed and runs away, like runs home, and it's just like not a great situation. But then so as soon as she gets back home, her brother, her brother, is like I don't you can't see him anymore, like don't. Like she's very controlling. He tries to...

...control everything she does, even though she's a fuller own adult and he's her brother. Basically, like then he slams a like a beer bottle on the ground, like right next to her, glass shattering everywhere, and he chases after her. When she's like no, says no, like you can't control me like this, and then he slams, like he slams to the door and opens it and breaks her nose, which is just awful. Immediately she calls Conall and she tells him that she tripped, I'm in her herself and she just didn't know who else to call. But he knows. He comes like to the house right away and as soon as he gets here, he like asked her. She's like was it him, and she just like nods, and then like walks out of the house. He stays inside and like pushes his brother, or her brother, up against the wall and it's like if you ever touch her again, like I will kill you, like don't, don't even try. Yeah, and then CONA goes out to the car and like says, I love you and I'll never let anything like that happened to you again, and they're just driving away. Zoom, Zoom. This is a terrible way to like and this point of the episode. Like this episode within the show, not like obsome, but Um, I was like, do they not have deer in Ireland? Yeah, like they're speeding down this road and I'm like, I'd Bet Teru. I didn't you hear? I am driving at night because of that very reason. Yeah, you too. We're also from Pennsylvania, where the the animal of Pennsylvania is the white tailed dear. Yeah, well, that for us. Oh, another thing is that while all of this was happening, the mom, Maryann's mom, was home and she could hear everything that was going on and she just chose to ignore it. Yeah, she just does not even try to push back in her son or even support her daughter in any way. Yep, okay, so last mate it last episode. I feel like I'm never the one that ends um like and all, there's a first time every day. Okay. So starts off, we're back in Dublin and it's Marianne's birthday. She's celebrating with the real homies, nil and his friends, and Joanna, I think, is there and she and con all are now living together and she doesn't really talk to her family anymore and Marianne is happy for the first time like ever. And well, one day during the semester connor gets, I said Connor to Oh wait, no, you said call. I guess a Colin Connor. One day he gets an email and it's an offer to get his master's fine art in creative writing at a school in New York. I'm assuming it's n why you are like one of them, probably, yeah, I think it would be Nyu. And he doesn't want to go because of his anxiety, but Marian thinks he should. And CONALL is also the editor of a literary magazine at school, and so they celebrate his achievements in pushing out a magazine. And he also invites Marianne to Christmas since her family didn't ask her, and they have just a grand old time chilling with Lorraine. Love it, except one day they run into Marianne's mom in town and she just literally ignores them. All. It's Awfhol so then we fast forward. It's now New Year's Eve. It's basically a high school reunion. Everyone has matured now and as a lot nicer, Marianne has basically made amends with all of her bullies throughout the show, which is good because it just shows that everyone's mature. And Yeah, so that that was a good time. connal finally displays like a little bit of affection towards Marianne in front of all of these people by like kissing her a midnight of being cute. When they like...

...walk to the party, he like immediate, like it seems like he immediately let's go over hand to hug his friends and she gets like really worried. It's like, Oh, it's high school over again. But then like as soon as he sees her again, he like puts his arm around on her and the kisses her in public and like they like say that they love each other and it's like a good growth moment because, yeah, we love to see it. Yeah, so now we are back in Dublin and the show ends really with them ending things for now so conall can go to New York, so they don't actually even end up together in the end. So love that. And even so, I was looking up like what happens, like if there's a sequel or anything, and the person who wrote the book wrote a short story a few years later about like what happens to conall and Marianne and it's they're just like friends really who have like kind the short story ends with conall breaking up with his girlfriend at the time and Maryanne ending things with her boyfriend at the time, I think, and they're like twenty three or twenty four at that point, but they're close friends, so I don't know, they don't even end up together. In that I get, like I get it. It's supposed to be normal and like things aren't always perfect and like things don't end how you won the end, but like, come on, after all of this, like really, I feel like my time was wasted right. I literally at the end I said, gross, it's over. Yeah, like they just like end it with them being like basically exactly what happened when they broke up because he couldn't stay in Dublin for the summer, and she's like yeah, it's frustrating. I have something that might cheer you up a little. Okay, it's a little warm your heart. So you know how coddle wears that chain on his yes, yeah, so at the end of the series, when they're wrapping, the actor actually gave the woman who plays Marianne his chain. It's that's sweet. Yeah, because I did notice that like every time he took a shirt off, like you just see the chain. He snick and I wondered if it had any like significance. Like I guess technically not, but like giving it to hurt the end is it's just me. I think KNA wears it because it's like the one nice thing that he has. Okay, yeah, that makes sense. But yeah, like I I kind of felt disappointed in the show. It was fine, like there's nothing wrong with it, but it wasn't like. I mean, there are something wrong with it, but it like wasn't extraordinary. Doesn't make me want to watch it again. It just like, you know. Yeah, and I hate to say that because I know how much like people really liked it and I wanted to like it. HMM, I'm gonna say a little confession here to the audience. I actually watched like the first few episodes of the show back in like what may or June? And Yeah, I thought you just watched like the last week. No, I had to stop because it was kind of boring. This is the first time finding out about this cheated uh. But yeah, unfortunately, I did like, well, I would still say like this. It counts as how we never seen this before, because it was so long ago that I don't even remember. Well, wasn't that? It feels like a lifetime ago because I'm is different in quarantine and Um, it like I didn't remember any of it really. I just remember that like I stopped for some reason and then I remembered...

...why. It was like only like the first two episodes. MMM, I don't know. I guess it's fine. A little. I'm a little hurt. Okay, when we did twilight, you saw scenes of twilight. Everyone seen scenes of twilight, the baseball scene. Who hasn't seen the baseball see? I don't think I did before that. Oh God, all right, whatever. Sorry, I guess we'll cancel the show now because I cheated. It's over. There's man, all right, moving on. Find something better you. Yeah, so, I guess.
