Hi Everyone, welcome back to how we never seen this before. This week we watched pen fifteen, and yes, we're going to call it thousand and fifteen for the sake of censorship. Join us as we travel back in time with the creators of pen fifteen as we relive some of our own awkward Middle School Memories. This is a podcast where two best friends talk about movies they've never seen before. I'm Isabel and I'm Lauren, and this is how have we never seen this before? You know, like when you're in middle school and someone's like, let me write pen fifteen or join the pen fifteen club. What? You never know. I don't know what club you are in, but it's not a club. It's just like a joke to like make like that on your hand. Oh, I don't think so. It's like on your hand. You have to wear it like all day. I never saw you with pen things, not me. I've heard other people to it. No, I'm not, I'm not like that. Well, you brought it up, so I don't know. So basically, this show, they're on the second season right now, which at the second season US came out, but we thought it'd be a good time to catch up and we decided to watch the full first season of it. And basically this show centers around two best friends, Anna and Maya, and it's there start of seventh grade, pretty much just their first day, and and going through the year and middle school dramas, which is so cringy but so relatable and funny the same time. So relatable it's insane. Like I couldn't believe how much I related to this. I was like a little sad. Do we all live the same lives? Like, how do so many people relate to this show? I mean, yeah, I like, I I picked us out right away, like it mean in the in them? Oh Really? Yeah, I think. Well, maybe just in the second one. I wrote it somewhere, but I was just like, my God, I'm Maya and you're end what my like, okay, Oh, we'll get them when we get there. Okay, I think you're Anna and I'm Maya. I honestly don't know who I want to be more, because it's pretty they're both pretty, UM, awkward. Yeah, I mean we were in sixth and seventh and seventh and eighth grade. Yeah, Oh, where you're a part? I don't know if anyone knows that. That's yeah. Do you want to do the character the start the characters? Sure, so, first we have Maya. She's one of the main characters. Like we said, her mom is Japanese, her name is Yuki and her dad is he's in a steely Dan cover band and so he's like always touring some key characteristics about Maya. That explains who she is. She has a Rollie backpack. That that's saying a lot. I talked about this before. And the boys at school call her you just, which is really mean. It means ugly as girl in school. This is why I don't want to like a tribute who we are. Okay, not at we don't relate to every part of every pairing, okay, but there are other points. Okay, I'm sorry. Yes, so throughout the show she kind of struggles with the fact that all the boys call her you just and it tears down her self esteem and she's just discovering herself as a woman throughout the first season. That's what we're going to say. I forgue way to put it. Yes, Um. And then you have Anna. She's the tall friend. Um, I don't know what else there is really about her. Her nickname is NA. Her parents are having a rough time. So her mom is a stayathome mom and her dad I don't know what he does, but they argue throughout the entire first season and it ends with them ultimately deciding to get a divorce. Anna's also a really good singer. Oh yeah, and she's really in love with this one boy, Alex.

...yeah, yeah, she's really in love without there's also like a bunch of side characters like Anna. My are the two main characters, and then Maya has a brother named Suji, and there's like boys that are there their friends. They're SAM, there's Brendan, there's Alex. I think one of Sugis friends is Evan, and I don't know why. I have brant and Dustin. I don't know who they are. I brandan, Brandt, is a Maya's crush in the first episode. He's kind of the one who starts the you just rumor. Oh, okay, okay, I don't know, doesn't much be another. Oh do sin's comes up in the last episode, I think. Or is that brant? That's brant. Dustin is brand's best friend. He's the of all with the earring. Got It. Okay, okay, and there's also some mean girls, Becca and heather, and there's like five of them, but you only really see Becca and Hannah or heather wait throughout the whole show. Every time they would talk about heather being really popular or US thinking of the cone and gray song wish. Yes, so is that it on the characters? Yeah, I mean there's no like people don't really develop that much beyond an then Maya so or like have any background. So yeah, it's just them. Maybe in the second season, but not right now. Yeah, so I guess we can get into episode one. For these sounds. I didn't write down the names of the episodes because they weren't I didn't think they were. problematically, they were and or sunny. So we'll just go right into it. So episode one is like their first day of seventh grade and at first I didn't think I could relate to it because it was set, it's at in the early s and there's like a lot of early references. But it's stuff that I understood as a kid, but it wasn't like something experienced like connecting to the Internet. I like never went on the Internet with the dial up when I was younger because we just had computer games. MM. So it wasn't like I knew about it, but I never had to do that. Yeah, I was never allowed on the Internet, for a good reason, because these girls get into some trouble only, yeah, scary. But anyway, so we meet Annam, they're two best friends, and Maya. They're like talking about like what to expect for the first day of Seventh Grade, and Maya gets up in the middle of the night before school and she cuts her hair and like I've cut my hair before, but just like, oh no, and her mom season the next day and gives her a bowl cut and it looks so bad I felt awful. Yep, but they also, I don't know, by the end of a season, I think it looks a lot better, like at the dance. At the dance, yeah, it looks okay, yeah, a lot better than where we see right now. And they they all car pulled together. So Anna, Maya, Maya's brother Suji, and one other kids, Sam. Oh, it's Sam. I don't know what I forget that. So when Sam enters the car for the first time and he starts arguing with Maya, I knew immediately that something was going to happen between them. Set it up the very first scene that they're both in. Yeah, so, yeah, like through as the episodes develop, you can see that Sam really likes Mayan. My has got a crush on Sam, but it's the friend. You're like, Oh, you're my friend, like why would I like you? Kind of thing. But so as I pull up to school, they both anemia are like we got a step onto the sidewalk at the exact same time. They like squish in the car door and they walk into seventh grade together and Maya has a rollie backpack and unfortunately I also had a rolling back bay. So I can hand embarrassment right now. It's like so, it's so embarrassing you don't want to be the kid with them fully back back. So that's where I said, I guess I'm Maya. Okay,...

I guess I'll give it to you. We also mentioned that Maya and Anna are played by actual adults. That that is my next point. Okay, I'd soon say why do they look so young but so old at the same time, because they're thirty year olds playing themselves in seventh grade, but everyone else around them is actual children. But yet somehow they fit in like my mind, like couldn't comprehend if they were old, if they were really young. Really like I knew they were old, like I knew that they were adults playing kids, but they kind of like fit in, yeah, weird way. Yeah, they did a good job dressing them and doing their hair and the braces too, but I honestly appreciate the fact that they didn't choose kids to play their two roles because, um, that would be really awkward. I don't know how they would ever find a child or their parents who'd be like, Oh, yeah, you can play this role. Yeah, that would be cuties to point no, and I don't know, I just appreciate that they did that. And at the like all the kissing scenes and stuff, they never got close to like the the kids never got close to the adults, and so they were they're very kind of professional, I guess, in that sense. So we basically were introduced to a lot of the characters in this episode. At one point they go to gym class and it just reminded me so much of our gym uniforms and they would roll up the sleeve so they're kind of like tank topped. I I'm like, I don't know how to explain it, but you like scrunch up the sleeves and put it like like like a muscle sure, yeah, kind of like a muscle shirt, but so scrawny boys. Yeah, and like get it Tam or like whatever wanted out at gym class and they're just trying to figure out like if these guys like them. And someone in a class, someone hands Maya a note that says they like her and Orl they hand Anna note that says they like Maya and they read it at their locker and like they're supposed to meet this person and these guys run up and call her. You just which is ugliest girl in school, and my gets really, really sad, obviously, like I couldn't imagine someone calling me that when I was probably at my ugly like I would, I would I would never go back to school. I would ask to be homeschooled, honestly. Yeah, but it's really cute because Anna's really there for Maya and it's it's a good best friend moment. And she also goes to her brother and her brothers like there for her also, like, I don't think we mentioned this, but before and the episode there are a bunch of papers up on the lockers saying that like Alex loves my, Brandt loves my all this stuff, like boys in school love her. And when she finds out that they were just joking and making fun of her behind her back, Sam takes all of the papers down. We're Sweetie, I know I love him sometimes. And Yeah, her brother's there for her. He like teaches her how to gives her a lot of mean words to say back to the boys, but it's nice that he's like he got really upset as soon as she's told him that she was called you just yeah, and it was it was nice. Also, the soundtrack is really good. Yeah, I love it. Yeah, I guess the episode just ends with her going to fight the boys and get into a verbal fight with them and she goes too far by bringing up one of the Kids Dead Dad. Yeah, and every in at schools like why would you say that? Because he starts crying and they like sprint off into her, her mom's car, and then I think it's Anna. She says, you're my actual Rainbow Gel pen. She's like the biggest compliment you could give someone in the early thousands. Yeah, what's like shocking to me about this show is that it's an Awesomeness TV show. HMM, like I always expect the worst shows, like that movie with Cameron Dallas. That's what I expect from all some NWS. I definitely didn't watch that, whatever that was. It's like it's not a good movie, it's the worst movie ever. But Um, yeah,...

I was not expecting that. Also, I feel like they're probably branching out with their demographics here, because I think Awesomeness TV is usually for like younger kids, younger than us. Yeah, it's kids. Really good, actual adults are when you're twenty two years old, you referred to yourself as a kid. But yeah, I really appreciate like them stepping out of their their regular content and making us something that's that's like a coming of age series for people who are like millennials and zillennials. But I guess I can move one episode two. Okay, do you know what Calico critters are now? Oh wait, maybe, if I saw a picture, I probably would. It's what they were playing with at the beginning of this episode. They just call them something else. They don't call them anything. They're just like playing a game with them. I thought they were playing with like Sylvanian galls or something that's there. That's what they're like calling them. That's like they're their town in their play thing. I'm looking it up. Okay, we're you. Okay, I was a Barbie, polly pocket, American girl doll kind of girl. I feel like you were. are like more that, more of what they are, more of like a Calico critters kind of girl. But yeah, I had I had all four. I had all. But did you play with polly pockets or barbies? HMM, okay, I said remember when we played with the barbies and like seventh and eighth grade, and we really, I were exposing, Oh what we like, what our world was with them. But we like duct tape clothes on them, like ear like we put clear tape and we like made outfits on them and stuff too. Yeah, we're definitely too old to be doing that. We we are like when we were in seventh grade, we would play office and stuff like that. Is I feel like that's weird for seventh graders, especially seventh graders now, seventh seventh graders now, definitely, but I feel like for us now. Do you like cocaine? I don't know. I don't think it's it was that weird? Like, Oh wait, I feel like you were a CALICO critters Webkins kind of goal. It also had webkins. Yep, yeah, I just had like two Webkins. I had very many. My Mom Museum is like not like bribes, but like if we did something, like if we completed a like a lot of chores or something, we'd get one. Oh, it was a great incentive system. That is because you have them as an actual stuffed animal and you have them online in the whipkins world. But that episode anyway. Anyway, sorry, Um. Basically, the girls, Anna gets this new caravan or like House that like is a Calico critters set and she tells my about it at school, like she has it in her backpackage. She's so excited and they're both like, oh my gosh, you gotta like play this when we get home, and everyone really makes fun of them, which is so sad and like it's pretty mean. And I was like, I'm so glad I didn't go to public school because I'm too fragile for this. Like I definitely wouldn't have survived. You're lucky that we didn't get bullied in middle school, but the people who would have bullied us we're just as like goofy. Yeah, we are all like at our school, we're all pretty pretty weird. So I think it might be fun. Of they go to the bathroom in the school, like one room, and these girls are in there and they drop a cigarette and then they that like a teacher comes and or the janitor. Yeah, the janitor comes in and those girls are now, but they left a cigarette on the floor. So an am I take it when they leave and they like experimenting with being bad girls, I guess, and they like put on really dark makeup and they decide to go to the gas station to buy some lighters and they're like, do I buy four, three, like count? What is it? What do people use? And eventually they are walking home and they go it's not heather's house, it's someone else's house. It's BECCA's house, this girl named Miranda. She doesn't come up again. But they go to this girl's...

...house and they're having a sleepover and they have beer there. So Anna's a little freaked out. But while so she goes to the bathroom and Anna's in the bathroom, may I like takes a sip of beer and and it gets really upset because they're supposed to have all their firsts together, which is like kind of weird. So then she like chugs the entire beer can and they then they start inhaling computer cleaner. Yeah, they start doing with it, which like is so dangerous. Like is like so at my job at school we're like cleaning up the entire office just because no one's been in there since March and just like Alex thing, and just because like to clean everything. It's like pretty dusty and there no one's been in there for six months, seven months now. So I was cleaning it and to get like dust out of the keyboards and stuff. We have that cleaner and if you press that for too long, it gets so cold in your hand because it's like freeze, freezing and stuff like it's just like it's not air. It's like actual I don't know what it is, but it's like increctly dangerous. I don't know. I don't know either. I can't say I've ever donal with it or would ever do that. Like it your hand like sticks to the bottle because it gets so cold and like it can like be freezer burn on things if you like press it too hard and you don't know if you're like doing that. So, like it's was like, Oh my God, please do not like freezer burn the back of your throat, but not to mention it likes straight up destroys your brain cells. Yeah, she passed. Maya passes out instantly. Yeah, but, yeah, eventually boys come over and they're all like trying to make out with each other, but no one wants to be with Anna, and then she gets sad because they won't have their first kiss together. And then my is like, oh, this is weird. She like gets into this the girl's mom's coat, and it's like, I'm a scarecrow. Then when that mom finally comes home, my I gets in trouble for drinking and they kind of have their first fight because and I was really upset about the beer thing and then the first kiss and everything. And Yeah, yeah, Oh, and the episode ends with them deciding to hide the cigarette that they had from earlier that they never smoked in the closet with the dolls that they were playing with from the beginning for the future. Yeah, Yep, so that was episode two. You get episode three. Great, all you time. That perfectly. Oh my God. Okay, so this episode we're gonna talk about the word a lot, masturbation. So basically the general plot of this is that Maya has a sexual awakening pretty much and gets really into a master beating, while Anna is struggling with family issues. So it opens with Maya playing with my little pony dolls and he gets turned on by them, like the dolls kissing or whatever. And Yeah, she she does her thing and that happens. And then while this is happening, Anna's at her house and her parents are fighting and just like screaming at each other, and the next thing I have is everything is turning my on. Oh okay, they're back at the one exact same thing. They're at school the next day and Maya's like freaking out because like she's looking around the room and just every everything is turning her on and it's it's she goes into the bathroom or whatever and decides to, you know, do her thing there, and meanwhile Anna over hears a conversation that this band is coming into town. I forget which band it was be witched. Okay, yeah, so they're...

...coming into town and q one hundred and two they in Philly. What are they in Philly? I had to look that up, because qund two is our radio station, like the most popular radio station in Philly. and Um, I looked it up and it takes place in California, which is they have a cue and do too? I don't know, I guess so. But yeah, I I was so excited when I heard q one or two because I think kid me like they they would mention Philly, but no. So and I was like, we need to win these tickets on the radio station, like we have to call like a thousand times, come to my house or something, and we'll we'll call. and Um, Maya says to Anna that she has plans with Sam to work on a project, and so really she wanted to go home and jerk off. and Um, so Anna's back at home. She's sad and she's freaking out because all she can hear her parents arguing, and so she leaves to go to Sam's house. But Um, because she assumes that my would be there, but her parents say that my was never there. And so and I was pretty upset. And then the next thing I have is everything is turning Maya on at dinner and Um, this is the same day as Maya's Ogeechan's birthday. So her grandfather passed away and today would have been his birthday, and so they're praying to him and Maya's mom says that he's always watching and Maya starts freaking out because that would mean that Ogeechron's always watching her when she's masturbating. And so Anna is at Sam's house hanging out with the boys and they're watching porn. So she leaves and then she finds out that she didn't win the tickets or anything because she didn't call. So like why would she have one? And then Ogie Chan Visits Maya in the middle of the night and she like starts freaking out. And the next day at school and has really mad at Maya for lying to her and hiding something, and Maya says it's because she sees dead people. And so they decide to get a Weigi board and they ask if Ogie Chan's in Maya's room and it says yes, and then it spells clit the Weigi board and then my ends up coming clean about everything. And Yeah, that was basically the plot of episode three. Oh, one thing that I noticed about this episode is that Maya has half a heart on a necklace that says best friend and I realize that I have half a heart that says best on it. I don't I have the other half. I know we've definitely like gotten stuff like that. I remember going to Claire's and getting those. I've I've got them with multiple people, so I don't know which friends I have. HMM, are believe I like the idea of having a lot of best friends. Not like a lot, I don't have a lot of friends, but like multiple best friends. Yeah, but also I really like their friendship in this because at the end when Maya comes clean, she's really upset about everything. She's like, I'm so gross, I'm so weird, and Anna's like well, I mean, like I kind of do a similar thing, and she makes her feel like okay about everything, which was nice. Yeah, I think Anna's a really good friend, but Maya, sometimes it's not the best friend. My like seems to get really jealous a lot and I don't know if that like stems from the whole you just thing or if it's, I don't know, something else. But yeah, episode for I, this was my favorite episode. You can do this. Okay, okay, I find it, I'll do it. Um. So Maya and Shoogi get a note from their dad, who's in this steely Dan cover band, and he basically tells her all the things that's going on in his life. Seems like really extravagant his bands tour, and she starts making up little white lies to make herself seem a little cooler to her dad. And and yeah, so she brings up the fact that there's a concert this upcoming weekend and it's their school band and choir. The next day at School, Maya Tells Anna during band practice that Alex, the the boy that Anna has a...

...crush on, is single. And they start they start practicing in band and the the band teacher, is principal Franklin from I carlee. I knew he looked familiar but I couldn't place him. He does this part perfectly of a band teacher. Yo. Yeah, and so they're practicing for the the night of amazing music, that's what it's called, I think. And Anna's at home and her parents seem to be doing better. And then Maya has to play the Timpany, which is the first time I thought that like you could have related to Maya, because he did. You did play the tympany and band. I never tuned it once, so I was only the key. Um. Yeah. And so the band teacher just yells at them all the time, which is just like really funny because I feel like all band teachers are crazy. Yeah, you have to be to be a band teacher. Yeah. Um. And so he really reminded me of our middle school band experience of this. This whole episode reminded me of middlesome. Yeah, and after after a band practice and it gets a note from a random guy, but she can't read what it says. So she goes to biology class or whatever class there and and they look under a mic. She looks under a microscope with her new partner, who's Alex, and she finds out that some guy named Brendan is into her, but she doesn't really care because she's so infatuated with Alex. and he says that he's going to the concert because he has to. I just wrote this is the best episode. It is so accurate. It's because they're so in now it's choir practice and Anna's competing for a solo with heather, and so heather starts singing happy birthday, just like, just like an average singer like in middle school. And then it's Anna's turn and she starts singing it like a professional singer and everyone's like staring in all at her. And so, yeah, meanwhile, so she gets a solo, and meanwhile Sam is helping Maya with her timpany sheet music, and they're kind of having a moment breathing together. He just looks her to breathe. Yeah. Um, she's really nervous because her dad like she really could her dad's drummer and she really wants to live up to, yeah, his expectations of her. HMM. So Maya's dad decides to come home because she told him that she has a solo, and so he's like, Oh, I need to come home to see my girl. I'm cutting the tour, leaving the tour early, and so she comes home to see him and they start getting into a fight because he's trying to teach her how to play. Yeah, and so now it's the day of the concert and the band directors picture is on the the pamphlets, which is just so funny. Like those little things make the show hilarious. Like how is everything? Like? They went to Middle School ten, twelve years before we did. But still it's the exact same HMM. And so it cuts to the the choir performance and Anna is singing ave marias pawlessly, and heather, the girl she competed for the Solo with, has to do the sign language accompaniment. And while she's singing, her parents get into a fight and her mom walks out, and then Maya's backstage like drinking Ginger Ale, trying to calm down in her hands, like freeze up for him, like clause. And and now it's finally time for the the band performance and they play an original song composed by the band Directer, and Sam is trying to hype up Maya during the performance, which she's getting every note wrong. And then all of the sudden, in the middle of the performance she decides to do a Timpany Solo and she it's not written in the sheet music and she messes the whole song up and everyone's just staring at her. And then after after she stops playing, the rest of the band tries to find the spot that they were at and start playing, but everyone's at a different place. And I was laughing so hard at...

...this because our middle school band, whenever someone would get off track and like we would get lost in like it was a disaster. Yeah, it would sound just like that. And then Maya ends up puking Um and yeah, so the performance is over after that lovely song. And so Anna finds out that the boy that's been sending her notes is this kid who wears a fedora and she says yes to being his girlfriend. And it ends with US Finding out that Maya's dad also lies about his popularity and he's not actually in like a famous steely Dan cover band. It's just he plays at motels and stuff like that. Yeah, that was a lot, but that that was probably one of my favorite episodes too. It was just being in middle school band and like band throughout high school, and everything is just like so relatable. And those outfits, the Yeah ands with the black flats and then a white button down shirt that you stole from your parents. Yeah, it's the the uniform of a musician. So episode five is their community service projects. They for this one class, they all to do mandatory community service, and Anna and Mya sign up for a fashion show at a nursing home with Heather's mom and all the popular girls and this one, another girl. And while they're at fashion show practice they see heather been over and she's wearing a thong and they the girls are like pretty mean. They leave Animi out of everything, but they go how there's like, Oh, you want to see my grandma's room, and they say only people who have been to heather's house can go, and that's everyone but Anna Maya. So while they're gone, they go through her bag and they put on her lip gloss, which is gross in itself. Yeah, and then they also take this thong out of her bag and then they put it on and like it was over. Anna put it on and it was over her underwear. So it's like not that bad. But then then Maya takes it home, washes it in the sink and then like this is she like let the water drip on her face, and so she was so weird. And then they dry it with the hair dryer and she like wears it and she there's just like a long montage or something of Maya just like looking at herself in the mirror, like if children were doing their parts. Like it's not possible exactly. And later we find out that heather stole it from her mom. So she's freaking out about having lost this and they keep saying they'll give it back the next day and I never do because they both keep wearing it and passing it off to each other in between classes. So they're both wearing it at the same time. It's so gross and it's so gross and like this goes on for probably, well, I don't know how long it's until they finally decide to give it back at the fashion so it's at least another week at school just passing off the same pair of underwear and oh it's so gross. And they finally at the fashion show. They're paired with other like with members of the nursing home, the part of the community. So they walk down the runaway and Anna's first, and then this girl Becca comes after her and she like pulls down Anna's pants to like expose her for wearing it, like she's not the one wearing it, mys when wearing it. So she anna runs back and tells my like she's gonna try and pull down your pants, and it's just like so awful and she does try it, but my holds her pants up, so it's okay. But then they like we have to give it back, like we can't keep this, like all this has been going on, we can't keep it and and it tries to rip it off a Maya and so stretchy that it's just like the strength out of her. It's so funny and they're like Heather's mom tells them like to all turn around and hum and like whoever has it...

...like put it in the middle, and no one does it. So they just kind of keep it until eventually, at the right when they're about to leave, my takes it and kisses it and puts it in like a pile of stuff. So it's like she can have it back. That was also a pretty funny episode. Yeah, but like also very gross, Yep, very unhygienic. So in episodes six, it's they have a school project that they have to do about osteoporosis. I don't know like what class that would be for, but they the project is that all they three other girls come over and they're going to be the spice girls, but they're going to be old spice girls and then drink milk and then be really strong, which weird. But so when they're deciding who gets to which Spice Girl, Maya really wants to be posh spice, but then the girls make her be scary spice because they say that she, quote unquote, looks the most like her. And then later, when they're actually recording a video, they make her be the servant because they say she looks tanned and that's like the role of a servant. So it's just like straight up racism too, and they're just being racist giving her these parts. And she also like says she pretends to be Mexican while she's she's like mimic or yeah, they like give like the the line that they give her. Are they like, Oh, like, you should pretend to be Mexican, which is just racist as well. So when they're at dinner, they like talking. They also call her a slur to at. I didn't really want to say it. Yeah, I just saw we'd mention it. Okay, not say the slur of but mention the fact that they did say yeah. But while they're at dinner they're like talking to her brother about the show, or they're not a show, but like their video, and he's like that's like pretty racist, and Anna's really confused because it's not something she's really aware of. So she spends the whole night like looking up racism and the civil rights movement and everything, and she decides to go to the principle and be like, I have recently become aware of a problem called Stemi racism, which like like that's really great that she like educated herself and stuff, but the principles like yeah, like whatever, this kind of like works itself out. That's the terrible Wy to systemic racism, something that's been happening since the birth of America. Yeah, it's sorts itself out. HMM, okay. So Nam de size to take things into her own hands and she creates a demonstration. But what she does is she puts a sign on Maya's locker that says I am Japanese, and then she like kind of like, quote unquote, hires these theater kids to be like read the script and they're like they say something racist about Japanese people, and then Anna walks out of a room and is like this has been a demonstration about, like that's what racism looks like, and my is incredibly upset and they go to the principle and everything and they're fighting and she's like why did you do that? You don't you have no idea what it feels like to be like made fun of because I'm your Japanese, like you're white, like you don't have to worry about this. And they they're in this big fight. And whow, I forgot Maya. May hangs out with her brother and his friends for like a little bit and they're like, well, you should fight her. They also teach her that racism isn't just she thinks that racism is lynching and yeah, dream examples, but Shuji kind of teaches her that microaggressions happen and tells her about those, and then she finally understands what racism usually looks like. Yeah, and she like has this like moment where she like like here's all the racist things that people have said to her. She's like wow, like I never realized all that. But they say that she should fight in Anna and basically they she's like, I don't want to punch you, like I don't wanted to punch me, but then they like do this corey grash fight routine or they just don't touch each other and like they work everything out. Because and I was like, I never realize like what this like...

...felt like for you. I was I thought I was doing a good thing. Obviously I wasn't. And I think it was a really good episode to have, mm, like in the midst of like all this like funny stuff that happens. It's it's it was a good episode. Yeah, especially because the episode was written by the girl that actually plays Maya. Yeah, that's what happens when you have writers that represent the characters. Compare that to you always sunny. Yeah, it was good. HMM. Do you wanna sure? I'll tell you. On all the episodes seven, we're getting their people. So this episode, Anna and Maya explore aim, aim. Did you have aim as a kid? No, I wasn't allowed to either. But yeah, Middle School we kind of we kind of did something similar with Gmail because, yeah, US far allowed to have aim. So we would Um have go on Gmail and there you it was kind of like a very similar concept and you would just chat with people on there and you could also like post to yeah, it was a call. It caused a lot of drama in our Middle School. It was a lot of fun. So Anna Decides to make her use her name, baby spice, six hundred and sixty six, Um and Maya decides to make her use your name, diaper one one instead of viper nine one one, Um and so analogs on and starts chatting with Alex and he's into it until he finds out who it is and he immediately logs off once you finds out it's Anna. So we've he's just so meet to her throughout the whole entire show. But like that's the thing in middle school. You're like you really like the boy who's mean to you? Oh yeah, definitely. And then they add sam, who's user name is little man big D in fourteen, and he seems really interested in chatting with Maya. Once he finds out that Maya's in the room with Anna, he gets really excited. And so yeah, then Brendan, Anna's boyfriend, is online and chatting with her and she's not really into him, like I think he just says that she has a boyfriend for the cloud. It's like a very middle school boyfriend situation, like they don't really hang out, it's just it's just a title. They decide to go on a chat room called hot people and Franklin County and they start chatting with random man who asks ASL and like if anyone knows a ASL, if you don't know. It's AG sex location. And so basically, whenever you were like first starting to chat with someone online, I used to. Whenever I would go on Omegal, they would always ask Asl did you ever go on? We never know. I hung out with Isabel. We were good kids, but but I would hang out with my other friend always go on Omega and talk to like absolute strangers, which was kind of freaking out. Know You, I was like, I was like Anna in like in this episode, like this all freaked her out and freaking out. That's why it's so relatable, because like it's fun in the moment and then when you log off you're like, Oh my God, do they know where I live? Am I gonna get murdered by these random so yeah, so they're freaked out that the random man is going to find them. But then Maya and Anna are both hooked on aim and Maya starts chatting with what she who she thinks is a thirty year old man from hotties and Franklin County and his name is fly, Miami Bro Twenty Two I think, and she says to him that she's a twenty six year old blond woman and he says that he's a gym rat and you find doubt that it's actually Sam. And so they're they're both kind of cat fishing each other, but they're very much into each other. Brendan Burns a CD for Anna, which is like such a classic two thousand thing, two thousand thing to do. Yeah, if someone burned a CD for me, that would make my heart swell. I'll do it for you. Okay, I feel like the equivalent today is making a spotify playlist for someone. Yeah, it's hard. Like I used to be able to burn CDs in my old computer and then all of a sudden stopped working, like a really sad yeah, my grandfather used to burn CDs with Jazz Music for me. She was like it's so sweet. Yeah, Um so then Um Anna and Maya decide to take hot...

...pictures of Maya for fly Miami Bro Twenty two blurry picture of her hand. Yeah, it reminds us of like whenever we would take pictures in middle school with like a professional camera. We'd always think that they turn out like so hot and like so prettiant. They would be so blurry, so over exposed, and there's turned out exactly like that. So they decide to send him a picture of her hand and he's like wow, that's so hot, and so he wants to meet her the next day in the bowling alley and they bring and Brandon for backup. C is for meeting who they think is the thirty year old man. And Brandon, we haven't described him physically yet. He's very short. He's he's like a little kid. Yeah, if you imagine like a short kind of kind of Chunky, but just like like that's how like all like middle school boys generally are. It's just like he's got a squashy face. Yeah, like they could protect them if he wanted to. Where's a Fedora, for crying out loud? Yeah, Um, so, yeah, they're at the the Bowling Alley and Maya's is trying to figure out who, who it is that that's meeting her on the date and she starts crying because she thinks that he came in and saw what she looked like in loft. Like how would he know know that that's her? So Brennan tries to Kiss Anna and she starts laughing and then at the end of the episode we find out that Sam is fly Miami Brow and he's like, I'm sorry, like I just was too nervous to meet you because you I thought you wouldn't be into me if you saw me in person. But he's really just covering for himself. But why would he ask her to hang out in the first place? I don't know, like that doesn't make sense to me. But yeah, Um, am I doing episode eight too? I can do that. Yeah, yeah, you're doing APSODY. Yeah, so episode eight. So a plot of this is that Brennan Invites Anna to his house this weekend to watch wild things, which is a movie that's rated are. I've never seen it, but it's apparently very raunchy and it stars Matt Dylan, who is just chef's kiss. I love him. And Anna Gets Maya invited to this. She wasn't initially invited, which is sad. But they're in band practice and the music teacher is just like yelling at this kid who has to use the the restroom and it's pretty funny. And they leave band practice and Anna's becoming popular because the whole school thinks that her and Brendan her boyfriend or hooking up, but they literally haven't even kissed or held hands or anything yet. And so and it's like, Oh my God, like I'm gonna have my first kiss this weekend at this party. And so they're at Anna's house and they start making out with her bed posts to practice kissing, and her dad walks in and ever is like screaming telling him to get out, and Maya tries to bring someone from soccer practice because she doesn't want to be the odd one out and Um, she goes as Sam, but this girl named Jenna with pre wrap in her hair comes up to Sam and he asks her before Mike gets a chance. Also, like that's just so classic, like a wrap in your hair. Yeah, if anyone doesn't know what that is, it's like pre wrap is that it's usually like a fun color and it's stretchy and you're you're supposed to like put it on like to wrap your ankle or something, but you always put it in your hair like as a headband. Yeah, and so it's just really took me back. But so they're at the Party and Brendan's cousin brings the movie over and Hum Maya sits between Anna and Brendan and they start whispering about how Brennan wants to Hook up with Anna. So they leave the room and Sam is getting it on with Jenna, the pre rap girl, and and Maya, I guess, feels a little left out, and she goes to like turn to the the cousin, and he's like not into it at all, and this really explicit movie is just playing in the background. They're just watching in all like they've never seen something like that before. Yeah, even though they were watching porn in like a previous episode. Well, the porn that they were watching was like between channels. Yeah, and so it was like two seconds of like...

...one boob. And so Anna is finally going to have her first kid. This she goes into Brendan's room and like, if you thought that the love island kissing sounds were traumatizing, you should just skip over the scene because, god Um, it doesn't show like Sam actually kissing the woman who plays Anna. That would be really inappropriate. I just had my mic. You really inappropriate. It shows them like each person's mouth individually and then like Anna actually kissing like a man and there's just he he like eats her. I don't know how else to like say that. It's so awful. It's like it's very wet like little pools away. Her mom is covered and it's just so gross to think that that that's probably most kisses in middle school. Yeah, because no one knows, HMM, no one knows how to kiss. Um. Yeah, so that happened. And by a kind of while all this is going down, she finally comes to terms with the fact that she has feelings for Sam Anna comes back into the room and it's just numb to whatever happened, as anyone would be if they were just assaulted by someone's tongue. And so the next day and as like I need to break up with Brennan because, like, I can't look at him the same way after that awful kiss. And so she confides in Maya and one of the popular girls is listening and she the pop. You know that one of the popular girls is going to tell him immediately. So they're trying to write a note and send it to Brendan before he gets word of it from one of the popular girls. And so Um, so Maya is running around school trying to find him to give him the breakup note and she didn't find him in time and Brennan breaks up with Anna. Now that the roles are reversed. She's really sad about it, even though she was the one who like basically broke up with him, like yeah, know, he said we should break up. It's only because she he found out that she wanted to break up with him. It's like, I don't understand why she was so upset, but yeah, that happened. And then Maya and Sam Talk. She actually says something nice to him and he says like that she's a really good friend. Yeah, Yikes. Yeah, I that. I just found that whole episode just super gross. You're not like the whole thing, like that one part kind of like just gross me out for the rest of day. Yeah, so, episode nine, Anna staying over at my house because her parents are going on this retreat to work on their marriage, and while she's there she's kind of like the I wrote ideal friend, but that's not like what I meant. I mean like she's a friend that your parents want you to have, because she like cleans the dishes and she's just like really polite and everything. And Maya gets really jealous of Anna and it's difficult for her to see get her getting along so well with her parents and at the dinner table She's like scatting with her with Maya's Dad, like yeah, and her brother, like they're like getting along really well. They're just like play fighting like siblings would, and her mom is brushing in his hair and they're like cooking together. And at one point during this episode, like Maya gets her period for the first time and it's like, Oh, maybe that's why she's like been like so like up and down, but she gets really upset when, like kind of the final straws, when she sees her mom brushing in his hair and she's like like why are you jealous? Like her mom says is like like Anna really needs support right now, like you're not a little girl, and she gets really upset and she's like well, like why am I not your little girl anymore? She's like you're my little girl, but you're not like a little girl. That's kind of what I got from it. Like you're in a really her parents are not like doing well right now. Like she needs a good friend and like a good family to be there for her. So her mom kind of holds her and they fall asleep and when Anna's parents pick her up after this retreat and they get home, they tell her that the...

...retreat like really open their eyes and that they're getting a divorce. And Anna's clearly upset and she goes to call Maya right away, but no one picks up the phone and she's like, Oh, you're like she's so mad at me, like all this stuff is happened. And then she goes through the school directory and she calls Heather instead, because hea there's one of the only other kids in their whole grade that has divorced parents and she just really needed some to talk to, which like good, that's great, that like you like, you're wow, like heather picked up and they like they talked about it. But it's like sad because my wasn't there for her when she really needed it. HMM, but that's kind of that whole episode. Yeah, I just think that my can be a really bad friend sometimes, and so it was really rough watching her treat and I so horribly like making her sleep on the floor and stuff like that. When she's mad at Anna. She like she's like can I just have the bed alone tonight? I don't feel good, and she like makes an asleep on the floor and and then episode ten, which is the last episode, they haven't really hung out since Anna left, and Maya finds out at school whole Anna goes to talk to heather and her friends that her parents are divorced and it makes her really, really upset that she wouldn't like. She just assumes that Anna didn't tell her and she like runs to the bathroom, and this far is super relatable to Um. So she's still in her period and she like grabs like a wat of toilet paper because she doesn't have anything else and like puts that in her underwear and like you have to do like in middle school. You like not prepared. That's like something you do all the time. She also there's like this huge panic when the toilet won't flush. Like that super relatable. You're like, I don't want like the Romans of that to be in the toilet. But yeah, the cleaning lady comes in and she's Super Nice about it. She's like trying to like teach her that like you can't sho try to flush a pad down the toilet. You can't do that. She's like. But she wasn't like judgmental about it. She like gave her a tamp on was like here, like you can have this in case you need it. Well, I does have a Tampon in her pocket. I don't know, that was a little year, but I felt like it came from a good place. Yeah, and it's so funny because, like when she like looks at it for the first time, it's like this giant thing in her hands. I like made up of a fake one that was massive, which is really funny. Yeah, and that's what it looks like that when you're like a kid, like it looks huge. I'm putting that like in you. Horrifying. It was so funny. Um, but there's also a dance tonight and and it goes to my house because they're going to shave for the first time. I've like super hairy legs, like any like kids don't like the first time. They were also sitting in a bathtub full of water. So by the time that they're done shaving, it's just sinking about so much hair how hairy the water is. Like, I'm sorry, but I would never do that with you. No, no, it's okay. But my also gets mad at Anna because she liked heard that she was gonna go get ready at Heather's house and stuff, but her mom's like, I'm not driving you to two places, like you're just going to get ready here. So they get ready and they get their pictures of their friends and it's cute and my hair looks really good. She's got a little like beads in it, you know, like the two thousands or like clips, and it's cute and they head off to the dance and they kind of like mine in a separate at the dance and Brendan has turn like Emo. He's got like a spiked collar on and he's like black eyeliner and the slips not shirt. Yeah, he's got like a so funny that he's like you broke up with me and I can't handle it. Well, also makes me laugh is that, UM, they're like dancing to these like really, really explicit songs and I can't believe we used to dance like. We used to like get low whenever like low would come on. Yeah, but it looks stupid. Yeah, but why were...

...we? Why would a DJ at a middle school dance play like songs about grinding and said he did say like this is your last chance, like on the last song or whatever, like get your grind known. It's like you. Why do Middle School Dj's do that? I don't know. It was gross. But so the whole time at the dance, Sam keeps looking at Maya to and Jenna gets really mad and they Lee and she leaves and eventually Maya makes your way over to Sam and they have a really awkward dance where they both have their hands on each other and shoulders. Anna at also asked Alex to dance, but he says No. And after that, like heather and all her friends come over and they're like why would you do that to heather? But they're also like the truth is, we are only hang out with you because my mom said that we had to. And while Samon Maya are dancing, he tells her that he's the online dating guy and she gets really upset and runs away and like tries to like run to Anna and they have this like weird dance routine that they have like all plant, like they've been working on it, but like that they do for this one song and then they like hug at the end of it. Can we learn that? Sure, we'll put it on, Tick Tock Um. Then this kid, which I guess is Brandt, yeah, that's brant. brant like comes up to them and he's like I forget what he says. First he says hey, you just oh, okay. He says that, and then Maya like flips out at him, and then he's like. He says, do you want me to finger you? And then they're like yeah, okay, and they go to a closet and he just like puts one of his hands on each of their boobs and it's like he just moves them up, his hand up and down. Is Very strange. Yep. And then as he leaves, he says I love you. He does. Yeah, am I was like, I love you too. I thought he said don't tell anyone about this. He says that and then he says I love you. Oh my God, I missed that. Yeah, so funny. Also, I like how you could like tell that no one was actually like touching the other person. Yeah, yeah, definitely not. Like I said before, Cutie's to point no. And then so they go to my house at the end of the dance and they I don't I think they were talking. I didn't really write it down, because then they go to her closet and they grab the box at the cigarette was in and they take it and they go and they take a walk outside and they like smoke a cigarette for the first time. HMM, which is like a weird way to end the season. I don't know, it also kind of works. It ties everything together. Yeah, I like that, but like that's that's the end of season one. I don't know anything about season two besides, like it continues on from here. HMM. But, like, what did you think of the show? As a hole, I really like to show. I think that they went about it and the best way, the way that they could because, like, of course, like, I don't know, it kind of reminds me a little bit of big mouth in the sense of it's a very sexually explicit show, a lot of sex humor, but at the same time it's about selfdiscovery in a sense, and I just appreciate that, because it's not just a joke about a penis. To have a joke about a penis in the show, it's intentional and it means something and I really like that. And I also like the fact that they didn't sexualize the young kids. The only people who are really sexualized were Maya and Anna and they were played by adults and whenever they would show like maybe something sexual for like one of like the kids or whatever. They would show an adult yeah, and not have a kid's face in it at all. And so I think that that's a good way to go about it because, like, it would be awful to have a show kind of like Cutie's, like a the movie cuties, that is played by actual kids, that sexualizes young kids. And Yeah, I don't that would not be good. I think it's like and it's nice because, like, I feel like so many people will relate to this and it's like something people probably have and will watch it. It's just like it's something you want...

...to see, like, I don't know, like, but they go about it in the right way. Thank you, sir. Yeah, but I really liked it. I thought it was funny. Yeah, or did I? Would you watch season two? Yeah, I think I will. I'm kind of too busy to dedicate myself the whole season another season right now, but I think I will watch it. Yeah, me too, especially because it's out right now.
