Hi everyone and welcome to season toepisode nine of how we never seen this before this week we watched the Queen'sGambot join us as we discuss how we think the actor who plays Benny is avampire. How we didn't know chess could be so intense and how Elizabeth inParis is a better show than emily in Paris. This is a podcast where two bestfriends talk about movies they've, never seen before. I'm Isabel and I'mLauren- and this is how have we never seen this before this week. We actuallyhave two winners of our guests to show of the week. Our first winner isClarissa, who has one before, and I think she was actually the first persontot ever guess. Any of our movies ore shows correctly and then our secondwinner is Cam, one of Lauren and my friends from Australia. Socongratulations to you to and let's get into the episode good morning andwelcome to sleepy time. Sorry, I'm Goinna go back to bed. Now we hope you all enjoyed last week'sepisode. It was a week long series called election night yeah, that's whyw. We didn't last week.It was just too much yeah if anxiety, if you want arepresentation of our mental state right now, just take the look at ChrisComo and see how he's doing because that's how we're doing H, poor guy, I think the election broke him. I think it broke most of us. I had a headache every night from justlike staring at my screen for hours upon and not that, like. I don't dothat anyway, but it wa a little bit more. Tens Yeah just refreshing the NewYork Times election page, even though it updates automatically like every twoseconds yeah, but we're back in just as all right as ever, we watched the Queen's Gambit andbefore we begin, Larn has some fun facts, but first my fun fact is that Ididn't know this was about chess ame. I thought it was going to be aboutroyalty and then, when I saw was chess I was like, ah God right, but spoiler Alet like I've, really liked itso wa like so much more than chess, but also I played chess when I was littleso like. Of course you did my sister and I we had chess computergames, they were really fun. I am not ashamed, they were more O my sisters games and I wasn't allowed to play them, butoccasionally I was allowed to play them and I, like them, see that's thedifference between our childhood. You Pay Tees Computer Games and I playedPajama Sam and insane aquarium. I I got to play in Santa Quari when I went overto my neighbor's house and I absolutely loved it and I I to this day beenlooking for a free version online yeah, but anyway, okay, so before the fumfacts actually just a little bit about the show. This is about chess, but it'sreally cool so LE. We have this girl Beth, who wasraisedin, basically raising an orphanage, and she learns chess fromthe janitor and she's like this math prodigy, but like also chess and they like drug the girlsand everything so like that helps her like hallucinate the games in her mind, and she can just like play them in her mind and...

...so she's, just like really good and she becomes the Kentucky State Champion. The US or theUS champion some sort of international champion, and then she becomes like the world champion, beating the Russians inLoscow that I just like told you the ending of the show sorry but yeah anyone who's listening anyway, wouldget the spoilers so yeah, that's true! This whole show's, just like a giantswailer alert yeah, never put it! So sorry how man do you have to know by now? It's fine yeah, okay! So now some fun facts weshould. We should do like a Deto, be do fun, facts o Mari there we go okay, but fun, facts we're getting intoit. So the Queen Scamet is based off F onethousand nine hundred and eighty three novel by Walter. Tevis, although theshow is based off of fictional novel, inspired by tevas's own life and Bethharmon, isn't real. This chess expert dilah McLean says that her storyreminds him of another chess prodigy Bobby Fisher, who is a man so basicallythe timing of the story aligns and Beth also plays competitions that actuallyhappened in Lavia, an Paris in the s this. This was mentioned in a New YorkTimes article and then the I sing on top of the cake, though this is wherethe tea is Bobby Fisher was apparently reallysexist and said that woman aren't women, aren't smart and they can't play chess. So the show is basically like a big slap in the face to him, and I lovethat that's what he ges for being sexist sure, okay, so that was my first fun fact.IAVE more so the original book was actually supposed to be made into afilm and directed and start by Hea, bledger and Ellen page before he died, and that was in an Leuk article, which is exciting. I kind of like who wouldat heat have played. I think it was Oh Benny, yeah thatou have been so cool yeah. He didsuch a good job yeah like you're right hard to imagine someoneelse, you're right Te. Also, like I love heat, budger, okay, the last fact is, it has to do with thefashion of it from fashion history fir to standpoint, so the show has a customwardrobe made by a Berlin designer Gabriel binder. I think that's how youpronounce your name and fashion plays like a huge part in the show like, forexample, it represents how like out of place Beth feels in society at thebeginning of the show, like based on her outfits and like the Desiner, also incorporateda lot of like checker patterns into most of her pieces, which is likereally cool because, like Beth would probably pick those out and then youalso get to see how FFT's fashion evolves into s counter culture. Bygoing from like the new look silhouette to Beth wearing like jeans, a tshirtand even a Pierr cadom dropweight dress, inspired like I'lfit is really cool and yeah. I just really appreciate thefashion in it because I love fashion history. I studied a bit of it incollege and so whan. I saw all of these references. I was like. Oh my God. Ineed to write this down Ieah I like now like watching any sh. Ifeel like it's only been two shows since we het emily in Paris, but I'mjust like...

...everything's, better million Pariscould never and they're getting a second season. I know I saw that whatalso I was so sad to find out. She wasn't real. I like I, was also likeokay with it, when it was just like supposed to be slap in the face to thisother guy yeah. That made me happy, but yeah. So I mean now knowing that juicy stuff, the team we'll get into that episode, so therewere seven episodes. It's for what I understand. It's a many series thatthis is it there's only seven episodes they're not going to add more likeanother season ever and they were all an hour or more long. So this is a lotof time, but we did it for you. So we DII for you our beautiful view, listeners. If we ever get this on Youtube and you can see your faces,we'll figure that out for season three, so our characters, our main characteris Beth, and she I mean it wait. Tell you a little bit about her already butshe's in this orphanage, because her mother died in a car crash that shecaused intentionally and you it's like it's unclear whether she was mentally unstable or like by theend, it's pretty clear that she was, but you don't know why that happened andher father's just like out of the picture, and she is he chess green bell. She I thinkshe becomes a grandmaster by the end of it. I won't give too much else. I thinkit'll be explained as we go, and then we also have joline she'spretty much in the first couple episodes she's, I love her. I thinkshe's great. Oh, she lis towards the end as well, but she is one of thefirst people that Beth meets at the orphanage and shelike she's a rebel. She basically teaches her how to survive in thisenvironment. That's not great like, but she also kind of helps her become adrug addict, but not intentionally. She like tries to like tell her like howmuch not to like to be careful. Yeah, hshe's, alsoreally young, end they're, also children. So it's Li hard, Jo, but joly. I know why go te thingingtat, but I think it's also important tomention that jolinas black and that she's, the only black girl in thisentire orphanage and she seen girls upon girls, get adopted before her, including Beth and she's, also a lot she's one of they're,one of the older girls in this orphanage and she never gets adopted, which is which is really sad because she's really cool and I think another person- that'simportant- is her mother, her adopted mother, I say mom a lot. So whenever I say mom later on weretalking, I mean her adopted mother. She when Beth was adopted. It was more forthe wife and this family. The husband didn't, doesn't really care he's, neverthere but she's. She doesn't know how to be a mother, but she comes into itafter her husband leaves her and is really supportive of everything thatbet does. I was just going to add like tans M, so along her chess journey, shedoes meet a few people who will talk about, but the main ones are towns so talens, Idon't know his first name. He just e never tells us, he was by towns andhe's just a handsome chess player who Beth is mitten for and then there isHarry deltick he's the chest dude that kind of helps her out and he's playedby Dudley Dirsley. No,...

...that I I didn't see because he looks sodifferent because he's not a chunky boy. He did yeah he's now a skinny legend and then the last one is Benny Wattswho is kind of like an Andy War Hall, inspired s like type of character, hisfashion, but that's all fasad because he's also like a really nice guy whohelps Beth yeah. He was like the US champion before her yeah chess yeah. Ithink that's it. There's SOM, like other random, chestspeople that, like aregt like that important theydon't matter, may Er Nog, but anyway, let's get into it finallyepisode one is mostly a flashback, but we first see a scene that comes up towardsthe end of the show, which is Beth in France in or Paris, in one thousandnine hundred and sixty seven and she is like she just did like drugs or she wasdrinking really really heavily and late. The previous NIYHT and she's late forher big tournament against some guy wait. I have a question for you yeah atthis point like at that exact point: Did you know that it was about chess?Yet I wrote my note I didn't know this wasabout chess oops before episode, one my so I think I did know that, but just because I had honestly right before I startedwatching, I saw a buzzfeed article about this, so I think that's what itwas. Okay, I loike on when I suggested this to you. I had no idea. Okay, Ididn't know this was about chance at all, so I went through like half of thefirst episode without knowing I still thought I was about likeroyalty for some minutes the orphan becomes the Queen, but anyway, that's like it. That's allwe see of that time for a while, and we find out that her mothers died in a carcrash when she was nine years old and she goes to this orphanige one thingabout this orphanage though so, like you go, you see their bedroom, which islike this massive room with just like beds upon bed of punbeds, and it likereally reminded me of something- and I couldn't put my finger on it, but thenI was like. Is it the Samantha American girldoll movie with her friend Milaly, and she lived in an Orphanie in New York City, right, yeah and then at theend of that they adopt her and hers right? Okay, that's what I thought itwas and then, like some kid like sows their finger into a machine that wastraumatizing as a TA yeah. That's anly good thing about for, like the first ten minutes of the show, because I remember that trauma as achild Y, I think every girl our age will like that is A. I think. They're called like flashboldMemories: Oh Yeah, okay, yeah, that makes sense. That's a flashful yeah, but, like I love American Godall, I think they're great. They try to behistorically accurate, but that's besides the point. Okay. So when they're there at this or Feinch, all the girls get two pills every day they get a pink one and a green one andthey're apparently vitamins, but as soon as she takes it, the green one orboth of them as soon s she takes it. She like is stumbling. She can't focus,Yo can't walk and it's actually a tranquiliser pill which is like Wlik, crazy, but joline tells her not to take it like just like hold it in her mouthand save them. Basically as her time in the orphanige progressive. She is so much better than all the other girls in school, so she alwaysjust like leaves class to go into the basement and clap e racers. But sheactually goes to try and play chess with the janitor, and she learns byjust watching him play like he won't teach her until he like says she'sready, and one thing I think is really really cool about the show is like soshe decides to save her pills and take...

...the at night, which isn't cool likethey shouldn't be giving children tranquillizers or anyone for thatmatter. But she takes them a night and then she'llstare by the ceiling and play chess in her mind on the ceiling, and I thoughtthat effect was really really cool. Yeah, just like they were like movingthe pieces. Ere like moving around but upside down, and it was really cool.Yeah itwould be really cool to have like that. Much spacial awareness towhere you could just like play chess on the ceiling like even like. I don'tunderstand when people can like play chest by themselves, yeah like and just like, move everythit anything around, but yeah, so basically she's, incredibly good andthe man from the local chess club, which is there's high school right nextdoor to them and he comes over and he is like. I want you to show me youplaying and she's incredible. She beats him pretty much instantly. I think yeah like this is a forty year old man and she gets to go to the high school everyThursday to play with their chest club. And at thispoint they the state, is going after the orphanage for giving childrentranquillisers. So she doesn't have these pills anymore, but she's addictedto them, she's going through IHDRAWL, but she's back at the school, the theLoga high school and she plays every member of the chest club at the sametime. So it's probably about like ten twelve members and she plays one moveon each board n then goes around and beats the entire team in an hour andtwenty minutes. So when she comes back she's addicted to the pills and likehasn't had them in a couple of days, so she doesn't really know what to do so.What she does is during, like a movie time she sneaks out and goes to theirlike little pharmacy area, breaks in and reaches inside the jar of thesepills and eats like two handfuls of pills and then steals the whole jar andthen then she passes out and then send of epsid one yeah. So a lot happens asyou can see. It's so much because, like each of these movie or each of theseepisodes are like a movie like they're, like almost a linkd of a movie, it's alot yeah and like we're like when we say an episode is like an hour longlike we're really saying that it's like forty two minutes, because we allow forlike commercials and stuff like that. But these were fully an hour long yeah,it's not like a TV hour. It's a it's a full hour! Yeah and I don't know. I think that I was a little bored atsome points I feel like yeah. I definitely could like yeah it's a there's so much that they have to likedrag it out at some points yeah, I ges, but I still like really, even though Ifound like some parts like a little bit boring, it might have just been becausewe watched this and like just a few days. I watch this in a day how I've been busy. So I had to watch ityesterday, my God yeah, so I don't know. Did you have anything like you reallywanted to say about episode? One, nothing really, but like it's weirdthat we watched this show this week, because a few days ago I was likebinging tryguy videos and I'm a like the one where they try to beat this chess grandmaster. So Ie learned a little bit about chess before watching this, and if I like, had watched thisand been like, oh, like she's, it's impossible for her to play all thosepeople at once like if I hadn't watched that video. I wouldn't have believedthat that was possible because this man he blindfolded himself and played allof them at once, and he beat them all. Yeah I feel like in movies and like notlike historically, but you always just like think that, like the chest, peopleare just like like nerdy and then like...

...they don't really matter, but likethese people are insanely smart, like Batcan like she played her game againstthe the teacher, the chess teacher like noteven looking at it, she would feel she would hear her move his move and thenjust like tell exactly what she was going to do and an a lot of thesetournaments. They end early because they both can see the moves that aregoing to play out and they just stop because, like one of them, thosethey're going to lose yeah, it's insane like and they'll like call drawsbecause they like they know, they're going to lose and it it's like crazy, there's so much more. A chess yeah whonew chess could be so intense yeah. Okay. Moving on to episode to, I don'thave as much for this one as the first one, so I'll be a little bit shorter. So we start off. Beth can't get any more pills and she's not odd, to playchess and then fast forwards to her being a Tean or something yeah yeah. Sonow she's a Tean, this weigt. This was weird because Ithought maybe they were like. I guess this never like amounten toanything, but I thought they were like lying about her age, because when thisfamily comes to doctor, she, like goes to say her age, but the headmostrustlike stops her. She does. She lies about her age and so it's kind of hardto tell how old she is at some of these points because, like I wrote this downlike how confused I was at her age because some of it didn' Maligneproperly but yeah, I didn't know how like that, would contribute to herplaying chess in the future like if like lying about her, like, I didn'tknow like if there were like age groups or something, but it never mounts toanything. So that's why I was like a little confused yeah. I also think itdidn't matter because she was so ahead in school, that it was the right ageanyway, yeah and maybe I'm sure she told Ama, oh almost her mom and he's noGE. They also like now it like goes to like the actual like actor for Beth, and she like looks so much older. That's why I, like I don't know I waslike. Maybe they just wanted to get her in or something, but I don't know yeahyeah. So now, she's a team and this couple comes to the orphanage and wantsto adopt her and the man is kind of He's like Classic S. Dad I thought HEU was going to beabusive, so I got that Bibe from him, but I mean he's like kind of likeemotion like, but like I thought like physically or sexually besivewards, heryeah. That's what I thought, because she was her mom was like yeah likeAustin. That's a dad's name actually wanted to adopt you and he was like shewas like. We wanted an older kid, and so I was like Um. That's the feeling that I was gettingto, but yeah. None of that happened. Nothing like violent, really happened.Yeah Yeah, I'm so used to violence that I'm like actually surprised when thingslike that, don't happen, but well that for American TV, okay, yes, so she gets adopted, her room is really nice and she finally has like aroom all to herself. So that's pretty spectacular for her and their house islike a Classi n thou s house, so gross yeah. I God o love it though, and sothen it's her first day of school and the girls are being so mean to her, because she kind of looks out of place. Her clothes are a bit drab and she'slike a nerd, and so she she does kind of make a new friend at lunch, but alsoat the same time she's not very friendly. Like I unders, I understandthat's because she hasn't been she's not used to being in social settingslike that, but I don't know maybe just extendin all of branch yeah. So thenshe has to go and buy cigarettes for her her adoptive mother and she sees achess magazine and steals it and she wants to enter chess tournament andthen her mom gets a prescription for tranquillizers ohwai. I think she wantsto enter the tournament, but she...

...doesn't have the money, so she writes aletter to the janitor Oh yeah, about like. Can you give me five dollars?I'll pay, you ten? If I win anything yeah yeah, and so he does- and thatcomes back later, and so the mom also suffers from addiction she's constantlyseeing like taking tranquilizer. She has a prescription for that she'sheavily drinking and she always seems kind of sick she's, always coughing andfeeling under the weather, and so Beth steals her supply of tranquilizers allthe time and yeah. So then she enters the chess tournament against all ofthese boys and one girl. She doesn't really understand how chess tournamentswork, because she's always played so informally with people, so she doesn'tunderstand how ratings work ratings are kind of like how many matches you winand like it's kind of like Youre, your place in the chess community, yourskill ranking. So she has a rating of zero, and so they set her up with thisgirl because she won't be able to play any of the Duys until she beats her, which is kind of sexist. I like, even though, like I know they weren'tsupposed to do that. I feel like it was good because she taught her yeah whatshe means to do, which is good yeah. The girl was like really nice to her, which is I love that for her girl supporting girls, yeah yeah, and so she basically Beats Everon at thischests tournament and then gets her period for the first time at the chest.ournament and then the girl, from the from her first match, goes and tries tohelp her, which is also really nice. I love her and so yeah, so that was thatchess tournament. She like baffled, everyone which is great and then herNew Dad Austin leaves her mom, which means the orphanage could take her back.If anyone finds out which is scary for her but yeah. So then she, Oh sorry, the chess tournament hasn't ended. This is I'm so sorry, if I'm confusinganyway, then she goes back to the chess tournament. It's like a weekend, longordeal and she is undefeated and beat someone on his way to a grandmasterraiting. So she gets the attention of everyone and the mom realizes that shecan make money if Beth plays Chust, so they decide to continue going totournaments yeah yeah, and this is where she meets towns, the handsome manand she also meets Belta cere right yeah. That's like the one who is on hisway to become the grammostter yeah, and I just think that when she saysoh comeon you ugly piece of trash that was great yeah. She says it to herself inthe mirror. Yeah, that's that's my mourning affirmation. One thing I like thought about this andI think I wreate it in a later episode, but when they started like going tomore chess tournaments, I was worried that the mom would use her for moneyyeah like the way it like felt at first. It was like, oh like you can earn moneyout of this, like. Let me go with you. Let me hold this check like ill likethis I'll like I'll handle it. She doesn't do that. I think the way itactually turns out which happens in the next episode is really good. I feel like a lot of the things that Ithought would happen didn't happen, and maybe that's because I'm so used to allthe bad things like coming from other people. It's like it's always like aexternnal struggle. Instead of an internal struggle, yeah- and I feellike for this whene, it was best like internal struggle with herself morethan Yeah Elik. Everyone else was really supportive of her, but she kindof tore herself down yeah like her own worst. Enemy is herself because evenher enemies in this show are looking...

...out for her yeah, some of them get into his bed. Yeah, that's nottolaner yeah, so I mean for me for episode. Three is probably my shortestone, so all work milly through it so up each episode, kind of starts with aflashback of some sort. This one it was a flashback to her biological mothertrying to drown herself when they were when she was really young or when bathwas really young. That's a lot of, I feel like some of that, like selfsabotaging like nature. That Beth has is like come from her mother and that'slike he's trying to figure out like if this is her. If it's like somethingthat she has to like tackle herl life, I guess but episode three is in thefirst half is in Ohio at the next tournament and Benny is there but Bennyis I wrote, he's that guy? That always looks like a child. Even though he'slike thirty five he's literally thirty- and he looks like he's younger than US-likehe's the kid with blond hair he's in lovmiss love. Actually and MAZrunner yeah he's the British one that Wa like everyone's like. Oh maybe hecould play Harry an AF Yo. U, but like because he looks like a child wo know,I don't know his actual name, but it doesn't matter. You know what I'mtalking about. I'm convinced that he's a vampire yeah and love. Actually, hewas thirteen when he was playing like a six year old, no he's literally avampire and Kera Knightley was fifteen and she looked like an adult. While he was thirteen, a d look like a child. It was so weird anyway anyway,so he's a chess master, and at this tournament everyone knows best name andtheyre when they see her sit down with them, they're like because they know they're going to loseto her, which is like cool and after this tournament, she likewins it. Her Mom actually asks if she could get like an agent's fee like shedoesn't want to like. Take all her money, she's like maybe like tenpercent, for like helping you and coming with you and she was like youknow what about fifteen. So, like it's nice like they have like a good dealgoing on whore, they do as they lie to her high school about her being sickall the time. So she can go to these tournament. I think it's a miracle. Shegraduates high school later yeah, but like she's Super Smart, so it doesn'treally matter. She also gets interviewed by Life magazine and isalso invited like as she like, gets, more famous sort of the girls at theschool chat like sort of become nice, but it's like fake nice and they inviteher to over to their house, one of the girls houses and, while she's there shegets like pretty uncomfortable she's like I don't just don't want to be here,so she leaves a house but before she leaves she steals the dad's alcohol andshe, this kind of starts her jur like she starts becoming addicted to alcoholas well as the drugs, but we, after that, we kind of Di jump to whenshe goes to Las Vegas, which is in the big US tournament. I think this was twoyears later right, so the last biggest one WS apprnone, housand, nine hundredand sixty six- I don't know, oh so- were three years into the futurebecause yeah it jumped a lot, and I don't know why town towns is like. Oh,it's been a couple of years since I saw you lost so I was like. Oh it's beenprobably like two years, because that would make more sense. Now. I have noidea how old she is, because I was trying to count like I based how oldshe was off of this episode. Oh alragh. Well, whatever towns is inLas Vegas. Beth is also taking Russian now, so she can be prepared when theshe starts playing. Russians which, like comes as you, get better becausethe Russians are the best in the world and chess, but she goes to townsh'sroom to take a picture from a magazine and to play chess, but it seemes verysexual yeah that it seemed like a little weird but whatever. But then, anyway, this other guy comes in and like it stops and she's like Huh, sothey startd to play chess and then she leaves because she's upset her mom alsolets her try beer at this and she like drinks it incredibly fast, but her momdoesn't stop her from getting another...

...one and I'm like just like. Could youhave like if you would like stepped in in any way like might not have done asbad but anyway, so throughout this whole tournament, she has to play Bennylike Benny's a you champion. Her final game is against him, but he like caughther off guard with a move, so she like thinks back to when she was playingwith the janitor, and he would tell her to resign at this point. So she thinksabout her like how she's played so far and she has played better than him andall the other games. So when she resigns they both become US champions,so it like all works. She like she becomes the Ashamin, but she's upsetbecause she's not the champion on her own one thing. I don't know if you knowthis, like I'm asking do you know the answer Um? Why do they have to write their movesdown? Oh to explain the like. With every time you go, and you like hit thelittle button to stop your timer. They then they have to write down exactlywhat they just did, but why do they have to do that? If P, like people arewatching them so closely like? Why do they have to do that? I don't thinkthey have to because if you watch the first tournament that she ever did, shewas just like looking at the chessboard and didn't write down her moves, but Ithink, as you go on and play people who are more difficult to beat you writedown your moves to keep track of what they did and what you did in the match.I could be wrong, but that's what I thought: ANDEA chess grandmasters outthere, no one who's, a chess grandmasser wouldever listen to. I nobo ask my sister. She maybe she'd, know yeah, but Ithought was interesting about this episode. Well, actually, what I thoughtwas annoying about this episode is that the woman who interviews her for Lifemagazine is the worst journalist I've ever seen. Oh Yeah, she sucks she yeah. She basically just infers thinks to get a story instead of asking realquestions and she doesn't print anything that she says. Really she justlike kind of like takes what she wants and like manipulate Ted Yeah. She talksabout that talks about Mr Scheivell, the JANIOR and talks about how, like hebasically taught her chest and amazing he is and yeah, so she doesn't print any of thatand she calls her crazy, essentially yeah. I feel like that also, likereally doesn't help it like kind of like makes her think like am I like, amI turning to my mother like w a what's happening so episode for it starts off with Bethin her Russian class and she is finally making a few friends kind of I feellike her. I guess because we don't know how old she is, but like her socialinteractions like progress like wildly like it goes from nothing to everything, yeah, which is like fine. I guess, but it's just like it's very strange to me,like, after being so secluded, all of a sudden she's, just like doing whatyou'll explain yeah, so they invite her over to like party with them at one ofthe People's House and houses and she starts getting into weed because, likeyou know, it's the s got all time for everyone, and then she ends up sleepingwith one of the guys and it's awful essentially she's like whatis this and then the next day Everon and theHouse has gone for the day. So they tell her to stay as long as she'dlike, and so she takes out as a sign to just goon a bender and she chugs wine smokes cleans. The House gote be so put off byF. If I told someone that they could like chill in my house for the day andit's like immaculate when I walk in because they spent the day cleaning. Ido tha yeah, and so her mom isn't reallybothered by it when she calls and checks in on her, like she's kind oflowky happy about it, because Beth is finally making friendswhat she really struggles with, because yeah she's so obsessed with chess. Sothen, after all that happens, Beth...

...finally, graduates from high school, assuming she's like nineteen at this point, she must a have been held backlike a year or two because she never showed up to school. I don't I don'tknow but now she's off to Mexico for a tournament she's going for thistournament, but they're also meeting this guy. Her Mom has beencorresponding with for kind of a long time he's like a salesman. Yeah he's like a shifty salesman. Sheyeah that's like in a back then like yeah he's like some probably sellinglike terrible products like dor doorman, Dorde, dor salesman, yeah bath is likeout of the country for the first time she's in Mexico, but all she can thinkabout is chess. While her mom goes off on little adventures with thisdude, but then she eventually convinces her to like go to the zoo and kind ofrelax. So then she's killing it at the tournament until this little likeRussian kid just starts like like met meeting hermatch, is that the right term yeah yeah, but his flaw is that he thinks thatThath is really pretty he's like eight years old, yeah he's really young. So this isunderstandable, like it's amazing that he's even able to get as far as he did,but they basically have to keep adjourning because it's going onforever and it ends with her distracting him and heeventually loses, and he wants to be a world champion when he turned sixteen. But I hope he achieves that we'll never know, and so then she has to play this.Russian man Borgoff who's supposed to be the best chess player. This is kindof like her boss level, yeah yeah, and so he before the match, starts he's in the elevator talk and smack about her in Russian, but becauseshe has been taking rushian classes. She understands she actually ends upblosing to him and then she walks up to her hotel room and finds out that hermom has died of hepatitis. So sad yeah, it's awful, I was so sad likeimagine all of that happening in one day could not so then she calls her dadher adopted dad off Austin and, of course he doesn't care, even though he was probably the one whogave her hepatitis to begin with, because he's been off sleeping withrandom women around the country, but he tells her she can have the house if shetakes care of burying her and the moreanepayments yeah and the mortgagepayments oiler alert that doesn't happen well, he doesn't hold up his endof the deal yeah and she holds up her ind of the deal but yeah I kind of have.I have a question for you. Okay, so in the episode someone says, you've gotyour gift and you've got your cost. What do you think your gift is o? Whatdo you think your cost is? Oh Godi, don't know I'm not gifted yesoor. I was GIV. I was like one of those gifted kids in elementary school andthen I like coasted through life and now I'm like freaking out Dok Shoup. I don't know I mean I think, I'm likegood an a lot of things, but I procrastiny, I think- that's probablymy God, like I wait until the last minute to doanything like even when I start like I'll start things like super early, butI'll never finish until the last minute. Yeah like this, like I didn't start this untilyesterday, so that was seven hours of my day yeah. I did do it before likemidnight, though so there's something I...

...think. That's yeah. I don't know whatmy gift is, but yeah. What about you? What's your? What'syour gift, I'm like you. I was one of those like gifting, kids, Ta that you're giftedever who never try in school, even in college. I didn't really try very hardto maintain my GPA and so now that I've graduated and life isn't like school, a really struggling, because I'm my gift is being a goodstudent and my cost is that that doesn't apply anywhere outside ofschool. I hate like that's like I feel like yes, but like so that's like how American students are raised, likewe're taught how to be a good student, we're taught exactly what we need to doto get good grades, because that's the only thing that matters for sixteen totwenty years of our life and then like. What do you do you cryin the showereverydime like we're not like? We don't have to take tests every week, we don'thave to write essays every week in real life. So, like I get like writing, sheels transfer whatever, like? What do you do with all that, like? What do you do? I don't know, like I said, crying the shower, becauseyour life is lost its meaning, Oh God, Ogod. I only have six monthsleve now you'll be fun. You're, a gifted GI, ohgod. Moving on from our tragic lives, an episode five Harry Beltic, so hecalls up Beth and offers to train her and says that she really can't getlocked into one idea of how to play chess like she's, very intuitive playershe like plays as she', seeing it she doesn't necessarily think aboutstrategies or named chess moves. Basically, he says that she needs tounderstand her. Opone is better and to like read their books and like knowtheir games, so he's trying is also clear that he's really like trying tohit on her and then he like sees the drugs and her bathroom t thetranquisers and like tries to like, I guess like be there, as is to help hernot use them. So they like hang out all the time and then Het's like I need tolike go live in this apartment that I havebecause I'm going to college as well, but then she's like no, you can justlive here and then he kisses her and then she's like. I wasn't ready. Do it again when they sleep together, but it's likevery awkward after and they like just don't know what to do they're kind ofjust like sitting there nd she's like well, you can go to your room if youwant- or you can say here like, I don't care just like Yu, that's so iswor itwas so weird, but basically she goes to the far. I think this faras cute. She like goes to the pharmacy where she would buy her mom cigarettesand when she goes in her pictures on the book of the magazine, a the chestmagazine, that's in there and he's like you know, you don't have to steal itbecause he knew she was stealing the book when she was younger. So she paysfor it. This time, she's like she says, keep the change for like for the firsttime that she sol the magazine, whicis cute and Beltick, and her they're like alsofighting over time and then eventually. He just leaves because you just can'tdo it anymore, but tells her to be careful with all the drugs and thedrinking. And this is that now we're in the Ohio Championship, ine thousandnine hundred and sixty seven, because there are murtiple Ohio championshipsand that's how I got all compused yeah. This is the US championship, yeah, soBenny is there and they both win all their games and then the next day isgoing to be the final, but they practice by playingspeed chess, which is just like moving as fast as you can, and they like beton these practice. Games and Benny wins...

...all those speed games and she getsreally upset that she's, just like not good enough, but eventually at h, thetorm ent the next day when they play each other. She wins because she'sbetter at him at like playing like regular chest like not like, becauseshe can like think about it. She doesn't have to like move right away,so she wins after this tournament. She goes to a bar with Benny and she likemoves his hair out of his face, and it's like I just like your hair andthen Ben he's like I can train you like. If you come to New York, so she's likeokay sure but then as soon as he gets up he's like, but we can't sleeptogether and yeah. You know they well nobut. I Yeah! I don't Ike have a lot to sayabout this one I feel like she is like older now, so I don't know like I don'tknow it's different and I just tedanly Dow how old she was, but she's, like Iguss finding yourself really trying to she'Si feel like she's, trying to findherself through guys and at the beginning of this episode. I didn'tmention it, but it's a memory of her biological mother saying that thestrongest person is someone who isn't scared to be alone, and I think she'sstill trying to figure that out, because she was alone as a child. Butshe wasn't really one because she had the chess player o the janitor andJoline, and then she had this family, but that she lost her family and thenshe had hit a beltick, but she lost him so shes trying to like keep making outforthe things she's losing. So she is scared to be alone. That'swhy I'm getting it so moving on we're in episode, six Ou, so Beth and Benny are finally in NewYork City together and Benny lives. In this dingy. Apartment and Beth has tosleep thought in air mattress and it's kind of gross and Benny trains her andone night. He invites some people to party, but it's a chess party. One thing I think is really good about Benny, for her isthat he will not let her drink. He won't let her do drugs like he's likeif you're, if you're here, there's no drink like you can't do any of that andshe gets so much better and even when the other, this like party happens, she's offered a drink, but she doesn't accept it yeah at the party. She meetsthis French model who travels around the world and they kind of hit it off,and she also schools Benny, Att Peechus, which hasn't really been done infifteen years and then apparently, that's a turn on for him because theyhave sex after that. So yeah now we're in Paris Woo insteadof emily in Paris, it's Elizabeth in Paris a much better show, much bettershow better fashion, and so beath wins her initial matchesand now has to face the Russian dude who beat her and so the night beforethe match. The French model that she met in New York City is actually intown and she invites her for a drink and, of course, Bheth goes on a bender, because that's just how it happens. So now we're kind of back to the momentthat the series opened with she's late to this chess match with Borgolfbecause of her vendor and yeah. She lost big surprise there and she goesback home alone and she's in a terrible mental state at this point, because sherealizes that it was all her fault that she could have beaten him if she hadactually like been sober the night before, and so things just keep gettingworse. This is probably her lowest point. She receives a call from herlawyer saying that Austin isn't really giving the house to her, and so hemakes her buy the house from him, which is just icing on top of the cake forhow bad her day is that woul sop what feelikg right right now she's doing?Okay like as soon as he sells the house...

...to her because she starts like fixingup the house and like I feel like that kind of like helps her a lot. But thenit goes downhill again. Yes, so she seems like she's doing okay, but she'sshe's barely holding on also. At the same time, this Christian Group offersto pay for her expenses to go to this tournament and Russia, oh in the nameof Christian imperialism, and then she she realizes that she'sreally not okay and she goes on another bender, just guzzling wine and takingdrugs. And it's not a good time for her BELTOK is concerned about her, so hevisits but she's passed out and she she wakes up and realizes that shebroke the watch that her mother gave her. I don't think we mentioned it, butshe always wears this. One watch that her mom gave her her stepmom Elma gaveher and she broke it, and she also has to be at this littlelike chess tournament at the high school that her first tournament was atin like in the morning, and she runs intothe girl that she beat at the first tournament and she's just so rude toeveryone. She's mean to this girl mean to the the guy running. The show she'smean to Beltic, who shows up to like maybe help her and so she's pushed everon away at this point because of her addiction and then finally, at the endof the episode, someone shows up at her door and what ar surprise it's joine Jono JackoOyeah. I like I didn't like. I know why. They, I didn't like her makeup, likeshe's like trying to rebel and she's trying to do like the is it like: Maud, MoD fashioned, yeah, yeah she's like doing MoD fashion and MoD makeup, and it's just like it's atimes, but I loved her style before what I loved her eyeliner. It WEMI Ididn't like it, I feel like it didn't fit her like eyeshape. She does. She has a big eyelids, though like I could never get away withdoing that. Look, but she could anyway, I mean it's sad that she, like everything, kind ofCrut crumbles down around her in this episode, Yeah and she's like her ownworst enemy yeah, but anyway. So in episode, seven, we start again with theflashback and we see the day that her mother died. Her biological mother died. They had gone to her dad's house. She didn't recognize her dad because it'sbeen so long since she's seen him shewas like who was that but she's likeher dad has a new family and her mom like can't handle it, so she they'redriving and her mom's, like close your eyes and like she drives into anoncoming truck and that's how it all happened. So she's, like, I guess, likekind of reliving that, because everything kind of has crashedin her life again so joline showed up, because she foundout that Mr Scheibel died. WHO's t e the janitor so she's there to like goto the funeral with her and just like, be there for her this time because shedidn't know, but so she sang at her house and she sees all the pills in themedicine cabinet. And we also at the beginning of the series like MSR Shibe, gave her a book and it was like a Chessbook, but she lost it when she wasgetting adopted and it turns out that joling had stolen it, because she wasupset that she had gotten adopted and she didn't. But she gives it back the wtwenty years like who knows how long, but several several years later, butbasically on their way to this funeral. They stopped by best old house, whichwas a trailer, so she's kind of Julian's trying to kind of forcing herto relive her past and like accept what has happened. So they go to the funeraland no one's really upset no one's crying and she just doesn't understandhow no one's like loved him. The way...

...that she had loved him when she waslittle. But they go back to the orphanage and she goes inside and goesinto the basement where they had played chess and she sees this board downthere, which has all of her achievements and everything she's everdone and like a picture of her Mer Scheibeland. It's so sad because helike he washe like followed her career because he was so proud of her and itmade her sad, but I think this kind of like reset her and she realized thatshe needed to do this for him and for herself and Fri Jiline, who also like, has always been supporting her. So basically, she calls up this Christiangroup that offered to pay for her trip and they've already paid for her to goto different things, and they want her to like read this thingabout how Christianity will save the world because or save the world from Communism. I just reel, like the Christian group, has the red scare yeah, it's ridiculous, but basically she says, like I'm, not reading this I'll, give you all your money back, but now shehas no money. So she calls Benny and asks him to go to Russia with her, buthe's like no you're you're drunk and you don't want to you rather be drunkthan be with me. I mean like what does she expect like he? He helped her forfree and then she's. Just like. Oh, I need money now like. I only call youwhen I need something yeah and like she kind of I think it's also. She likethrew everything away in Paris. So, like he's just like, I totally get whyhe didn't it made me sad but like I get it, but joline says that she will giveher the money, because she's been following her career and she knows shecan do it. JOLIAN saving the money to go to law school, but she knows likeshe'll get it back. I was so shocked that she would do that. I wouldnot do that. No, I wouldn't either but like like wow, but like I'm so proud ofJoline for like on law, School Sois, a bad bitch, but she's also like. She also tried tocall the government to like get money from the cultural fund or something Idoubt we even have that now so, but they're worried that theRussians will try and like talk to her and pass on a message about Gominissefor whatever, so they give her a guy to go with her and like protect her.So I yeah so now we're in Moscon one thousand nine hundrd and sixty eightand there's only eight players in this tournament and it's so. She winsprobably about her first four games, four or five games, and then she hasthis big opponent who's and he's a really old grandmaster and he's gotlike this crazy hair. He seems really cool, but the game goes on for so longthat they journd to the next day but as she's going to her room, she catchesthree of them working together and that's the thing about the Russiansthat they work together as a team. Even though they're like separate games, they're trying to keep the Russians at the top- and that's just like somethingthat the Americans don't do, because Americans are individualists good. Allthe American individualism but like by catching the three workingtogether she's like I like, really need to work because I know that themworking together is like stronger than me. So she starts practicing and it'sreally interesting because, like at the next day like when they come back fromthe adjournment, she beats him like really quickly, but he's really proudand he's just like you're, an amazing player like I'm Honord, to play withyou. I was so I was so good. Like I made me happy, he was such a homeyabout losing. I was so happy yeah. He was like really good. He likeit didn't. He was happy to play against like a good player like it didn'tmatter. If he lost like he knew how good she was yeah. He said that she wasthe best chess player he's ever seen yeah, so we kind of like skip throughthe next match, because it's not important and she's so much better thanhim. So it's like that ones done, and so there's one left and that's sporgovand the night before she flushes all...

...her pills down the toilet. So she'slike like I can do this without it andlheas she sing. So at that point andso the next day she's playing borgob. I think this part was cut, though, because, like everyone in Russiais so invested in this game that this kid isrunning back and forth from the hall of the game to outside, to tell everyonelike the moves as they go, but eventually borgob is the one that saysto adjourn, which is crazy because he doesn't do that and after, like they, juring town shows up and she's, like Oh, my God, towns and from what Iunderstand like towns is gay. He said he was confused at the time, but healways just wanted to be friends with her. I was confused to because he waslike. I always wanted to be friends with you, but then you broke my heart.I'm not really sure I think maybe like she just broke his heart because sheleft and never talk to him again, yeah because that could do it to, but so after chalenge shows up. Shelike there's this weird moment where she like asks him for pills, but thenlike takes it back, she's like you, don't know, I don't need them and thenthe next morning she wakes up and touns is like there's, there's a call freeand she picks up and it's Benny and she's so happy, because it's Benny andit's Harry beltic and all of her chest friends, and they all this is theirteam working together to like go through all the moves and like whateverpossible, move an come next and what moves she can counter from his move, and it's just like crazy that they can visualize this entire game. All hero,Nurdy boyfriends, are coming to help her. I know but anyway. So now it's back to thegame like it has to be this. This is it and Borgog goes first and then she forthe first time, without the pills she like looks up to the ceiling andvisualizes the entire game and they're all like looking at the ceiling.theyhave no idea what she's doing, but then Borgov offers a draw which meansthat they both stop and they both win, which he's never ever done and she'slike thinking to what the janitor had told her like that you lill wouldprobably say yes to that, but she's like no like. I like. I can do thislike she just shakes her head and she wins, and it's amazing because, likeBorgob knows like he's like he's really impressed, so he what he does is he,like picks up his king and like holds t in his hand, is like take it like it'syours, so lik they like I'm, showing what we can't see this but like theytake hand, and I like he was like the weird shake. He was a good sport. Hewas actually really like Kiend of on he lost yeah and it was great and she won,and it was amazing and the last thing she does before she leaves Russia likeshe's supposed to like go to the White House. Do all these things, but shelike gets out of the car and goes to this park, where everyone just like, sits in chairs and place chestthere's, like probably thirty tables, and justlike people all playing chest at the same time and like as she's walkingthrough they like recognize her and they're so excited to see her and theywant to shake her hands and then the last thing she does is she sees thisold like one of the old men and she sits down and plays a game with him,and it's really cute, because it's like the janitor and the playng and eole. Ilove that Sokute. I had like two comments, I think well so her final outfit that she'swearing its like this, this all white onsemble and it's kind of supposed torepresent like a white chest piece, especially like the Queen, which islike how she won. She was playing with the white chest pieces yeah. So Ithought that was a a good little symbolic fashion moment and she looksso good yeah. She was killing it and then the other thing that I was goingto say is that, like the suspense in this episode isinsane like Why d I cared so much about chess. In this moment I, and when her and borkoff like hug, likemy heart, that I love that it was a good moment likeit was like like she, I feel like she like, finally, really like beatenherself, like being everything that se'sbeen through, like obviously comeback. It's addiction, th disease, but...

...like like she really like, had it yeahand like the fact that so, when she doesn't win by like so yeah all theguys help her come up with like moves that potentially bordo would play. Butwhen they go to play like that final end of the match. After the adjournment,he plays so unexpectedly that no one knows what to do, and so she beats him still, and I thinkthat shows a like. It's kind of a lesson of feminism that you like yeah, like these guys, were willing to help her and teach her. But in the end itreally came down to her playing and she could do it by herself. I think alsoone thing I forget when it was said, but that you shouldn't play to youropponent. You should just play you like you shouldnt, try to like. I think whatI said made sense but, like I think, that's what Borgob did he tried to playher like play, how she plays and that's not like he couldn't win like that, like that's how she wins, because she that's how she plays and sheunderstands that M. Yeah honestly, like I love this so much, I thought it wasreally good like it took so much time and like I say that every week likewatching shows, is so much more work than watching a movie, but I did reallylike this and I I didn't think that I would like I because I don't know Ididn't know a s about chess. I was like. I just need to like get another show inlike we got this, but I really liked it yeah and also like. Apparently, thechess community is really happy with this show because it paints chest in a different lightthan how mainstrew media usually persuays it yeah, so great for them.Yeah Doo an represent the community, well tink you'll play chess after havingwatched the show I really want to put like. I was talking to my roommate lastnight and he was like do you want to play chess and I was like yeah like wewill put just like I'll bring I a board back after Wen a break. I've neverplayed chess, but maybe I will learn Wel we'll go to a park, we'll play game more of a checker's Gal myself, butthey even say like Checker, says nothing on chess. No, it's the stupidperson's game! Yeah! I really like this e youvannyclosing thoughts. No, I don't really have anything to add. I just I reallyenjoyed the show yeah. The pacing got a little boring for me, but I think if Ihad spaced out the time that I took to Watsh each episode like washed it inhouse instead of Holeu, I would have not been as bol something I'm Ik. Morelong episodes are hard yeah, especially when there's no like commercial breaksto break up the time. Yeah, it's just straight hour of content and I'm notused to it yeah wel yeah. I thought this was really fun, so if you wouldlike to win or guess the show of the week folls on Instagram at how we neverpodcast and on twitter Hawvwe, never and on facebook, at how we never seenthis before, and we should be up with another episode next week unlessthere's some big election or whatever, unless there's a coup unless there's aceue yeah.
